Sorry I should have made what I meant more clear. I owned a newer (2004) DW cast bronze which was a more gold colour than my 14 x 7 and I asked DW why they were different. I was told the newer ones had shells that were outsourced from Taiwan whilst the reddish ones hat we both have were shells made in America which are increasingly rare and sought after. Both of ours have the black and gold badges meaning our drums were made around the year 2000, mine is actually dated Oct 25th 2000. I'm 99% sure yours is a 5mm shell like mine!SONOR, ZILDJIAN, REMO, PRO MARK, Favourite Drummers: Matt Cameron, Nicko McBrain, Mikkey Dee

And it actually makes seance that it would be 5mm because its heavier than the 3mm reference brass which is 3mm with die cast hoops, and heavier than a reference steel which is 2.3 mm cast steel with die cast hoops, both are 14x6.5 while mine is 14x6.
Either way, history or no history it's a great snare!
And for the price I paid, I couldn't be more satisfied

Oh, that's really cool, I actually emailed Dw my serial number asking for some more information.

Mine is easily the heaviest snare I have ever lifted but its SO worth it, total beast of a drum. Bronze is the heaviest metal for snares I think and the 5mm vs 3mm shell wall makes a lot of difference in weight!
You got a keeper there, thats for sure!SONOR, ZILDJIAN, REMO, PRO MARK, Favourite Drummers: Matt Cameron, Nicko McBrain, Mikkey Dee

I would really like to hear your snare sometime, how do you tune it?, mine is tuned really high and it is SO responsive and sensitive, and it amazes me how most snares under that tension would choke and sound flat, but this doesn't, you are absolutley right, it is a keeper
If you can, look inside your shell, see what number is engraved there...

Just gonna put it out there, I find the EC Reverse Dot to be a great head. Live, I don't think you can beat it! It really tamed my snare and the thicker head made it easier to get tone out of and drier. I now have a coated G2 and it records much better, but I'm not enjoying it as much live. Apart from it being a bit ugly, there's no reason to change it - it being ugly shouldn't be your primary concern anyway :P Don't change it!

YES, it is so HEAVY a bunch of my friends made fun of me because of that, but they don't know what they're talking about.

I have to work on recording it, been trying to since I got it but not sure my Iphone will do it justice! Mine is tuned medium, nice fat crack sound. I want to see what its like really highly tuned, reckon I'll get a Danny Carey sound as he cranks his ridiculously high! I may have to try this soon! This thing NEVER chokes, even at low tension it still sounds gooooooood. This snare will be with me for life now, thats for sure.
There is no number engraved inside mine, just a stamp saying Oct 25th 2000, what does yours say? Does it have a number? Have DW got back to you by the way?SONOR, ZILDJIAN, REMO, PRO MARK, Favourite Drummers: Matt Cameron, Nicko McBrain, Mikkey Dee

Sick is definitely a word I would use to describe our snares, the 3 of us have absolute beasts. I measured mine and it is 5mm rather than 3, much like an original 1980's Tama Bell Brass (those are super rare and valuable). When I first got mine I thought the shell was thicker than my 14 x 5 from 2004 and measuring it proved it was thicker!
I have not tried a Spirit, are they 5mm thick too? I would imagine a 6.5 one would sound similar to my DW, I noticed I can get a similar sound out of it to the sound Josh Freese gets out of his Spirit in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXlKkzjkheg
