nice score! usually the bronze is sealed........ . if you do not want to strip the laquer i would not use anything other than warm soapy water. if you plan on re- lacquering you could have it professionally buffed out prior. just be sure to not touch it at all with bare skin as the finger prints will show even after re lacquering. i would just clean it up and play it.........while doing a little research as to if you want to attack that beauty.

I have acouple brass snares and i clean them with lemon juice and paiste cymbal cleaner, i just lather it on to the shell and massage with with my bare hands. once it is clean rinse, then reruns with baking soda and water to neutralize the acid, re-rinse, and then seal with either laquer or wax. Brass and froze is a hell of a lot harder to clean and maintain properly compared to some other materials. so i would reall research before messing with the finnish to much.
        got G.A.S. ?

Love bronze snares... great buy. And nice head choice. Don't be pressured by those who feel coated heads are the end-all-be-all for snares

It's funny you say that because this head is more open than any coated head on the market

Great score and cheap too! My 14 x 7 has a serial number starting with 1694.. as well, guessing it was made very closely to yours! It looks great with that head, I have a Black X on mine at the moment for a change and it sounds great! As well, I measured mine and its 5mm not 3, guessing yours may be as well?

Yeah, I've seen yours, it must be HEAVY, Yours is in a much better state, with die cast.. man it's gotta be nice!
I didn't measure mine, but I read in the internet about a snare exactly the same, and the owner said it's 3mm, but as soon as I find a rullor in this place I'll measure it
I really recommend this snare head, it's so open, really enhances the sound of the snare!, but as you can see it's controversial, but who the hell cares?

Mine weighs 15kg, utter beast and the best snare I have ever played. If you can find die casts for yours, I would recommend them although I havent tried triple flanged on my guy yet. On the 5 I used to own they were really open and sounded great though. These older ones are 5mm, I measured mine with a ruler so I'm guessing yours will be as well! You have a rare and immense beastie there so keep hold of it! I may give that a try, Evans Reverse Dot right? I'm usually a Remo guy, but that looks cool! Screw controversy, its your snare, do what suits you!

If it's a 5 mm then it's even better! haha
and yes, it is an utter beast, and this is with an old reso head and snares (I should replace them, but there is no need right now because I'm not recording)
I bought it the same day I had a drum lesson and my teacher is freaking amazing, he is a BEAST, and has awesome gear, he told me he thinks this is better than his 14x6.5 Gms black nickel over brass (special edition I think), which I have been inlove with.
also the shop I bought it from said they will try finding me new gold lugs and tension rods, for free!
I would love to have die cast hoops but they run here for like over a 100$ a piece which adds up to over 200$, so maybe someday in the future :P.
the only thing, is that if you use this head, you would probably want a piece/have a piece of moongel.
also my snares serial number ends with 67, while yours with 49, so yours is 18 snares older than mine

Terrific drum but I'm going to join the bandwagon to ditch that head. Used one for all of 5 minutes before I trashed it. Made a fine instrument sound like a cardboard box.

If its 18 away from mine then it is definitely 5mm. Does it have a red hue? Hard to tell from the pictures, but if thats the case then its one of the American made shells which are very rare, highly sought after and insanely amazing sounding.

Bronze is better than brass in my books, I prefer the darker sound and a thicker metal shell is better IMO than a thinner one.

With our snares being 18 drums apart, they are related arent they? That makes them brothers!
