With a great wood snare, I'd get something metal for a little variety. You could do a black beauty, they are nice snares, but I would personally recommend a brass free floater or brass sensitone, either 5 or 6.5 depth depending on your preference. That would cover most scenarios in two drums, and you will be able to swap out when you feel that urge for a little different sound. A brass sensitone will only set you back at the most 300 bucks for a 6.5 brand new. they truly are underrated snares...just ask anyone who has one

I'd say black beauty, supra, ultracast, or acro. I'm a fan of seamless.I'm using my Christmas avatar until they are the correct size.

with $600 this is what i would do.
used 70s Acro $75-100.
used 13x6.5 yamaha musashi snare $130.
used Omar Hakim Sig. $150-175.
used Pearl Freefloater 14x6.5 Brass or Bronze $150-175.
used Pearl Maple Soprano Snare 12x7 $120.
used Budget Steel snare 14x6.5 (tama, pearl, whatever.) $40
used Black Panther (almost anyone you want) $200.
obviously with $600 you wont get all but you can get some.
