  • Got wood? DW VLT Exotic

So much for this beauty coming mid July..... Still it was well worth the wait!

6.5 x 14 VLT Natural to Rich Red Fade over Olive Ash Burl with black hardware and signed by John Good.

I was after a deep wood snare as a contrast to my 5" Cast Bronze and looked at a lot of snares including a Brady Jarrah ply (awesome snare), a Tama Maple Starphonic, a Pearl Reference and Masters and a few others. I decided to stick with DW as Neil Peart has my absolute favourite snare sound on Snakes and Arrows and Clockwork Angels. I heard him play one of these last year and was hooked on how good it was. The only other deep snare I played I really liked was a new Supraphonic (on my list to get eventually!) but I wanted a wood shell specifically and I am not disappointed.

It sounds incredible, fat with plenty of crack and a solid maple tone throughout. It has plenty of resonance which is quite pleasant as opposed to something more harsh. The 3 way butt plate gives 3 very different sounds to my ears, all of which I like! I'm having a hard time deciding which one I like best and I haven't even changed the stock head or tuned it yet! It sounds great straight out of the box.

As far as looks go, I have yet to see a snare as stunning as this but I pretty much expect perfection from DW. The fade is beautiful and the wood is very unique and highly figured, it is fantastic.

I want to thank Jimbojim for steering me towards getting one of these, it was definitely EXACTLY what I was after and I am looking forward to experimenting with heads. Anyone got any ideas or suggestions for heads? How about snare wires, are 42's or 30's going to make that much difference?

I ordered mine new so it was pretty pricey but an investment and worth every penny!

If you arent fussed about the finish too much you should be able to find one on ebay for $500 or less.

            Glad you like it!

Beautiful snare man!! I've never been a fan of black hardware, but I honestly think it looks great on that finish and really sets it off.

Hey all, thanks for the replies. After living with it for a while and using it at practice I must say I am very impressed. Its worth every penny and sounds unbelievable. After playing a bronze snare for the last 2 years I have REALLY missed the subtle tone and warmth that maple possesses and it cuts very nicely through guitars! The volume is great as well as the deep fat sound with plenty of crack to boot.

One thing that surprises me is that after owning 3 solid shell snares ( A Craviotto, DW Solid shell, DW Super Solid) I expected this to not be as good but I think its a lot better than those to my ears!.

I'm glad I went witht he finish I chose, took a long time to decide and i avoided chrome as I am planning to order a DW kit with black hardware and most likely the same finish as this beauty. That and I am finding chrome a bit boring....

I am going to try an Ambassador x on it to se what difference it makes, any other head suggestions? What about changing snare wires?

I currently have an Ambassador X on my 13x7 and while I love it, the coating started to wear off very noticeably literally within the first 15 minutes of playing on it and I'm far from an insanely hard hitter. I would think it's just a fluke, except this is the 2nd Ambassador X that I've had this issue with and I've only tried 2 so far. The wierd thing is no other head that I've used (Remo or Evans) has ever had the coating wear off anywhere near this quickly before. So while I love the head, the coating thing is really puzzling me.

I don't mean to thread hijack so please forgive me, but here's a pic of my new Ambassador X after not even an hour of playing. And I was using small sticks too Pro Mark 718's. If you're doing a lot of brush work and need the coating then you might want to steer clear of this head, but otherwise you might be good to go. Just my personal experience and trying to help out.

I can't say I'm a fan of the aesthetics (for my money double ended lugs on a snare that deep leave far too much space covered my tension rods and I'm not a fan of the black) but I bet that sounds fantastic. The finish is also flawless looking too, lovely wood underneath the finish.

                              Cheers for sharing..
I play Panda Percussion and Istanbul Mehmet Cymbals with negligible talent.
