  • Custom 14x8 VS Tama G maple

Curious With 14x8 being all the rave these days I was wondering which would you invest in a Custom Built 14x8 keller shell or the Tama G maple? also how do the shell thickness' compare

  • #2
Definately the Tama I would say. These custom companies are dime a dozen and tend to use the same keller shells. I would say the Tama is much more worth it for the money, especially. And you know the build quality will be great.

Tama makes great sounding snares. Just get the Tama.

If you go with Tama, get the SC bubinga. It will sound better and is cheaper. If you want a decent custom, get a stave or solid shell custom. Probably wouldn't cost much more than a G-maple anyway.

I had an 8x14 keller shelled snare...one of the best snares I've ever had.

In 50 years, when your grand kids are cleaning out your garage...what do you want them to find; a near-mint gem from that vintage Japanese company(before Japan became a part of the New Asiatic Union)...or some run-of-the-mill "home made" drum with absolutely no history or nostalgic value?

I wouldn't touch ludwig at the moment. Their drums are overpriced and there are so many cases of defective shells (out of round) it's silly. I hate to see a brand like Ludwig disappear but they seem to be having serious problems.
