  • tuning AGAIN!

how many tuning threads have i posted?

ok im an idiot. i recently had my snare in a place that i really liked. however there was massive snare buzz from ALL my other drums.

i plan tyo get new snares and a new reso anyway. however stupid me i decide to try and tune it a bit better.

    stupid me.

now it sounds waaaaay worse and the buz is much worse and still from all the toms.

my snare seems to be giving off a really high high pitched overtone REALLY annoying me. i have both heads cranked pretty high for the reason that my batter head is a bit warped so it cant be much lower or it flaps about and sound terrible.

im looking for quite a loud sort of foo fighters sound but not one that totally chokes all the ghost notes and rolls out fo the drum so it sound like a machine gun.

oh my snare is a pearl vision steel sensitone 14 x 5.5 coated remo cs batter clear hazy ambassador.

Evan's Genera Dry batter will suck the overtones out of the drum but it is still a single ply head so it won't bog it down. Overtones are why I hate steel shell drums, because that is just how they are, lots of overtones.

When you tune the snare if it is the same note in any octave as the toms/kick then you will get what are called sympathetic vibrations. Snare buzz happens all the time though, and I think people just need to learn to deal with it... because the 200 threads on this topic all say the same thing; there is no way to entirely eliminate sympathetic vibration while you are playing unless all your drums are muffled to the point where the heads really don't vibrate. When you are playing live you will not really notice, and if you do, the audience won't.... so get over the snare buzz and just tune the drums how you want them to sound.

ive seen it and his kick and tom tuning videos really helped me but the whole tuning to a pitch thing doesnt really work for me it just cant seem to make it work.

and i would prefer a deeper snare maybe a wooden one so the overtones are really there but right now ive gotta work with what ive got right now

How old are the snares/reso head? Changing them might help you out a bit. But honestly, learning to tune properly takes lots of time and patience. What I do is tune my kit drum first, get it sounding perfect, then I tune my snare to it's ideal range. After that I tune my two toms in between the pitches of the snare and the bass. Of course I'm playing mostly jazz music nowadays, but I find this method helps get the drums in their ideal ranges and avoids snare buzz.

Bad news though, that buzzing will never disapear altogether, but as someone else mentioned, when you're playing with a band, no one will be able to hear it, espically the audience, and thats the key thing.

the snares and reso are mayb 6 months old the snare are the pearl vision senistone stock ones and the reso is a remo amabassador but i have cranked it up pretty tight in the past.

i know itll never disappear but i figure there must be some way to minimize it there just SO MUCH at the moment it sound like a constant snare roll.
