What shell materials do you think are essential for any drummer to own snare-drum wise? I've already got Steel, Aluminum, Maple, and Birch. What else do you think is necessary?

Everything you can find! How about Aussie hardwoods like Brady uses? And copper and most definately heavy spun brass like a black beauty. And bronze. Then you have to look into the very expensive snares made of cast metals like iron and bell brass.

The essential snares are the ones that you need to get the job done. Have you ever been playing something, and the snare sound was not what was called for? I would say the snare needed would be essential to getting what you want. Then and only then is a snare essential to have.

if you check out that 5 star drum shop article about snares, it gives you all you need to know. Can't find it right now, but it is very helpful. You should have a good maple drum, maybe 14x5 and 14x6.5 as well as a good metal snare, like a Supra, Acro or Black Beauty. My name is Matt. I went to Temple. I love jazz. I was born in 1982.

I like birch for the warm, woody sound with a fat crack
I like Brass (Ludwig Black Beauty) for the LOUD, sharp crack and articulation at high speeds and even when playing tiny, soft ghost notes
I like Copper (Yamaha custom copper) for the deep, bassy warmth of wood mixed with the piercing, bright crack of metal.
I like steel because it's versatile and good all around.
I want a good Maple snare._____________________________________________

Yeah I've considered Brass and Mahogany for possible options in the future...
