Has anyone converted a 9X12 tom into a snare drum. The shell would need snare beds cut and a throw off. I dont use a 12" in my current setup and hate for the drum to just sit there. Any thoughts? Am I crazy?
It's not crazy, many people on here have done things like that. Alanfromscotland is currently converting a 13x11 tom.
People have said they sound great afterwards, with surprising results.
Not much skill required either
I've thought about this, but then I keep thinking where is the line? I mean, do you want a high pitched or low pitched drum? I imagine a 12 X 9 would sound similar to a 13 X 6.5, so why would you fiddle with the depth so much? That being said, no, you aren't crazy. But consider the fact that you will have massive depth on the snare that will make it hard to position.

Good points! I would use this a an auxilary snare and I was going to use the existing suspension mount instead of a snare stand for easier positioning. The massive depth is what concerned me about the conversion. Since the drum has re-rings once the snare beds are cut there is no turning back. Thanks for your input.
12x9 should be a cool experiment. I only wonder, since it's so deep, how sensitive it will be. I have a 12x7 and it's borderline with sensitivity. I'm sure if you pay close attention to the bearing edges and snare beds, an excellent sounding drum will come out of this.

I just had a friend hold some snare wires underneath my 9X12, and it sounded pretty cool. if I did it permanently I'd get a tom mount and mount it off to the left of my hats.
