Well, after a lengthy period of sending my snare back and forth, I was just informed that my current FF snare is "to spec." Apparently the badges often pop up in the middle, and it is considered normal and acceptable.

I am a bit disappointed with that answer, but I still like the sound of the drum. I suppose I will just have to get it replaced down the line if the edge decides to pop off of the shell as well.

You think they could have said that over the phone / email before you sent it back? That doesn't seem right to make you go through the trouble of shipping it back just to say it is normal. They knew you were shipping it back because of the badge popping up in the middle.

Q: I've been thinking about swapping out the snares on my Tico Torres Sig for some Puresounds, however the snares currently on the drum are longer then your standard 14" snare wires. Now my question is: Can I use regular 14" snare wires and use longer cords/straps?

You cannot use normal 14" snares. They've got to be made for a free floater...I bought some of the Puresounds free floater ones and they are really good.

Sorry if I entered the reply in the wrong section. My first post. I have a question about the snares on the free floaters. I've had a 6.5" X 14" steel shell FF for about 10 years and never paid much attention to the snares on the bottom since setting them up in my basement. Recently, I purchased a used 3.5" X 14" FF in brass and the snares on it had worn a hole in the bottom head. When I was replacing the head I noticed the snares were not the original snares and much shorter (13") from the snares on my 6.5" which are about 15 3/4" long and extend beyond the rim/bearing edge.

As the answer in this post indicates, the snares for the FF are longer than normal snares. Why are they longer and what is the advantage of the longer snares that extend beyond the rim/bearing edge? It looks like the longer snares would put more pressure on the bearing edge. Are the longer snares prone to wearing a hole in the bottom head along the bearing edge? What issues do you run into with shorter snares on FFs? I plan to order the recommended Pearl snares for the FF, but was interested in understanding why these are longer and what other options I have. Thanks.

Just out of curiosity I did a search for FF lugs to use smaller shells in my 6.5" FF frame. The only online prices I could find were from Drums Etc. (not a plug, just the truth)

This is what i found:
3.5" lugs = $8.95/Each
5" lugs = $10.95/Each

Just thought I'd share this in case anyone else was wondering themsleves.

Are there any limitations to the replacement shell thickness? I'm considering putting a thicker segment or stave shell in the frame.

I'm currently playing a 4" high 3/8" thick Walnut segment and a 4", 1/2" thick Birch segment in my 5" FF frames. Sound great, no issues. For some reason I was underwhelmed by the stave shells I used to have (5"Purpleheart, 4" Walnut).

Comes with a standard piccolo maple shell as well as a 5 inch bubinga shell. I would potentially have picked that up myself, but I don't like the idea of using long tension rods to keep a shell that is that much larger.

Can an ebay seller raise the price of a buy-it-now item? I'm pretty sure that this cost 250 yesterday. If so, the seller is getting a little cocky, and I don't know if he will get a buyer at that price.

That would have been my undrilled 4" WorldMax Black Dawg shell in the 5" FF frame. Nice combo!

Now that I look at it again, it does look like it has the matte finish that the steel shell FF's have. The owner probably just doesn't realize that it's not brass.

I may have asked you this last time, but how did you go about getting that undrilled shell?

Does anybody know if it is possible to buy the free floating system by itself, and if so, how much would that cost? There is one on ebay right now, and it's price is rapidly approching the price at which it would just be better to buy a FF snare and sell the shell (or.. you know.. keep it).

edit: I have seen a picture of a black brass FF, or so the poster said. It did not look like it had the same finish as the black steel FF drums, but I had never heard of a black brass one, so perhaps it was steel. It was a deeper snare, though, and I have only seen shallow black steel FF snares.
