  • Made my first snare!

I've always wanted to make my own snare drum and I've finally done it! Because I live in Australia, shells and parts aren't that easy to get so I went to drumfoundry.com. I was surprised how quickly it took to make. Overall it took about 5 days. Of course most of that time was waiting for the polyurethane to dry.

Its a 10 ply maple Keller shell, 14"x5.5". I'll admit its not the greatest looking snare. But I wanted to do something simple for my first one. And it turned out exactly how I planned. So I'm pleased with that.

Also I'd admit the sound is kind of average at the moment =/ I still haven't tuned it 100% though. But I have a Pearl Forum at the moment and it sounds way better than that snare. Hehe.

Ok enough waffle. Here's some pics. Not really the best quality pics =/

I now wish I made it a little more interesting =/ It looks better in real life though. Everyone says that though, haha. Was more a challenge to see if I could do it. I've now got plans for either a piccolo snare or an acrylic one.

IMO it's looks great, the only thing retaining it from being really good looking is those lugs, they're awful...

Great achievement dude, I wish I could make one...

You didn't make it, you assembled it. Don't worry about the sound quite yet, fresh heads need to break in and warm up till they sing and stay put.

if that's the case, then technically for any person or company to 'make' a drum, they'll have to plant each tree, mine each mineral and process absolutely everything so that the finished product comprises of parts manufactured from raw materials that they themselves processed. according to what you just said, i doubt that any person or drum company 'makes' their drums, they merely 'assemble' it.

did you make that sandwich yourself?
              no, i assembled it.

Uh... First you make an extremely rude comment and then you have the nerve to totally blow my comment out of proportion?

"Making" a snare drum to me is constructing the shell, making the bearing edges yourself, cutting the snare beds, sanding, laquering etc...

to be honest, i would be far more impressed if my senario was factual.

i do agree with your definition of 'making' a snare drum, so i'll leave it at that.

your bed sheets are interesting too. the darker blue kind of says; "i'm comfortable enough with myself and my sexuality to choose not to reflect my masculinity in everything i buy and wear", but at the same time the light blue says; "come back to bed Hank and love me 'til i bleed."

Cool. You can collect your mum and sister from mine also. I've had them here for weeks. They are beginning to smell.

Thats what you THOUGHT. I only made up they were here for weeks. You actually DO have a mum and sister. They are locked under my bed. I took them at your birth. And I use them when I feel like it. You will meet them for the first time tonight.
