  • Abe Cunningham snare on Around the Fur?

    Oy mates!

Listening to some Deftones right now and can't help but notice how insanely nice the snare sounds on Shove It! Really poppy but seems to have INSANE sensitivity! Anyone have any ideas as of what he used?

His studio snares back then would have been a 5x13 DW, 6x14 Vented OCDP, a Chad Smith or a Bell Brass.

He didn't usually record with the Bell Brass, although I have a feeling it was either that or the OCDP on that tune (before Tama, he was an OCDP dude).

I can't remember exactly how that snare sounds right now. I'll check up on that.

Yeah, that Shove It snare is amazing. Sometimes I just listen to the opening 2 seconds over and over again.

I think that it was am OCDP. At that time he was playing them, before he got the Tama deal, but I don't know which sizes he used.

He also uses a 'lucky' bass drum in the studio, which is also an OCDP.

I think we'd be looking alot towards the DW and the Chad Smith, but how do you know he used these?

I highly doubt the Chad Smith was used...

it was his 6x14 Vented 20 ply OCDP Snare with 4 2 inch vents.

I have friends that work for OCDP, I asked them er...about 6 years ago when the album first came out...er...could have been longer, its been years now.

in 1997 they had their Self-Titled record under their belts and they were on a major label so I am sure Abe could've afforded the Bell Brass if he wanted it. But I'm not surprised that the snare on Around the Fur is that OCDP snare.

Their self titled was their last released studio album. It went Adrenaline, Around The Fur, White Pony, Deftones.

I really dig the snare sound on White Pony - Digital Bath.
It has a lot more body than the snare on Around the Fur. But still has that Crack! and sensitivity.
Actually the whole kit sounds great.

Do you mean My Own Summer (Shove It)?

I think that might be a 13x7 Brady Jarrah Block snare.. I know he has used that in the studio a lot, and that seems like the kind of sound that snare would make.
