If you like the sound of metal drums, a brass or steel Pearl Sensitone would be a good and relatively inexpensive choice. I'd personally get a 5 1/2 brass to get better clarity and a nice, high pitch to cut thru heavy guitars. The Chad Smith signature is also worth looking at. The free floater models i'd stay away from for now. They take a little more experience to set up properly in my opinion, they cost more, and they use extended snares that a lot of small music stores don't normally stock. The FF's are great drums, but maybe not the best thing for a beginner. I play hardcore/metal and I use a Chad Smith snare pretty frequently. The Sensitone 5 1/2 brass would be my top pick though.
