Haha, I can imagine! I had picked up this Reference kit as b-stock for a pretty solid price and I already had a matching 22x18 that I snagged off eBay for an absurd steal of about $420 shipped a year earlier, however I still haven't set them up yet. At the time I bought them, I had literally just re-headed my Masters BSX so I wanted to give them a bit more love before they went into their cases for an indefinite amount of time and the Refs went up for the long haul. But yes, definitely getting an 18x16, just holding out hope if I can snag one at a great deal like I did the rest of the kit, LOL. I've had 14" & 16" the entire time I had the BSX so it's time for something new that can rattle the windows like an 18".

And same! I was lusting after those BoB Redlines when they had came out. I see the snares popping up here and there online and seeing them got me thinking that since I won't have a full BoB Redline, why not just get the snare? I'm use to the black on black with my Jordison snare, but later on down the line I may order a matching 12x5.5 Masterworks snare, but with gold hardware (I'm a sucker for black and gold, haha).

The Ian Paice is a very lovely snare as well! There's quite a few snares I've been drooling over including the Reference Brass and most recently, I've taken a liking to the discontinued Jimmy DeGrasso signature snare (hammered brass with gold hardware). So we'll see.

Yes! Black and gold, a classic combo. I almost opted for #124 Matte Black Mist with gold when ordering the MRV kit.

Man, don’t talk to me about the Reference brass! I bought a 14”x6,5” from a friend years ago for a very good price, something like €400, but for some unexplainable reason I decided to sell it. The biggest regret of my life! I thought of getting a new one a while back, but the RRP has gone up significantly, €1200! No way I’m paying that much. Luckily I got a good deal on a Canopus 14”x5” solid brass on my trip to Japan.

I don’t know if you got it there in the US, but here in Europe (and in Japan I think…) we had a Limited Edition Universal Brass 14”x5,5” which reminded me a lot of the DeGrasso signature. The price wasn’t bad either. I tried to get one but they were already sold out.

My next snare purchase will definitely be the Hybrid Exotic cast aluminum 14”x6,5”. Should go nicely with the MRV kit I’ve got coming.

I know this is peak-PDF levels of pedantic, but once you'd get those black reso heads, you should get the insides of the hoops painted piano black. That kit will be perfect then. It's the kind of thing you don't notice in real life, but you do in photos. Either way, it's still awesome.

Haha! Yes, I have discussed painting the hoops with a friend who owns an auto body & paint shop. I’m totally OCD what comes to my kits and those hoops definitely do not work the way they are. It’s a shame Pearl doesn’t finish the insides of the hoops on their “cheaper” kits anymore. It makes a huge difference and I would gladly pay a little extra to have that beautifully finished look.

I did indeed! Sold them years ago and got a set of Yamaha Absolute Hybrid Maples. Always wanted to return to Pearl though… and now I’m back!

Hahaha, yes! I honestly was VERY skeptical that it was a scam until it showed up. I was slightly off on the total but still a great deal! Just looked and it was $432.60 ($352.60 winning bid + $80 shipping). I'll take that over paying $1,500-1,700 or whatever they're going for now and it came with an Ahead case too! LOL.

And LMAO, duly noted! I've never had any interest in getting a gong drum but in that 18x16 is as potent as you're saying, I might have to close my credit card.

But YES! I love me some black and gold. I likely wouldn't do gold hardware on a whole kit (due to me wanting to then match all my hardware), but a snare with gold hardware would suffice!

The price on the Reference Brass 14x6.5's need to stop going up though, just saw they went up another $100 to $1,400 USD. Ridiculous. But very nice! I'll definitely have to check out that out and keep my eyes peeled for one.
