  • Looking for info on Session Custom kit.

Greetings. I am looking to get back into drumming after a few year hiatus. I previously owned a nice Mapex M series kit that I enjoyed. I have ran across a 6 piece Session Custom kit and was looking for any comments about these drums. Thanks in advance for any insight.

Hey Vet, welcome to the forum.

Post a pic of the drum you speak of for more info. I've seen the Session Studio series' with the Custom, Prestige, Classic, and Select names and they almost all have different shell make-ups.

What I do know is that the Session line has always been a great, budget friendly option usually falling just below the Masters series drums. They offer pro features but with less finish and size options. Always a good buy if you find a good price.

I personally own a shell bank of the newer Session Studio Select line and absolutely love these drums.

Thanks for the reply. I will see if I can get a pic. I did notice that this section of the forum seems to have little activity. I wasnt exactly sure what to make of that.

The kit comes with 10,14 16 and 20 inch Sabian AA cymbals and 14 Zildjian hats (not sure what series). The owner says the lit has no dings or scratches. He was asking $1200, but is now at $1050.

The only issue for me is that I would rather have a 13" tom instead of the 14", but that isnt a deal breaker.

Assuming the cymbals are professional series (Zildjian A or Sabian AA) or similar, it looks like a really good deal. I'm assuming hardware is included as well? If so, even better. If not, I'd still check it out.

I have just a little bit of experience with Session drums. I agree, they are just a whisper below Masters series. Not enough difference that the ear will ever pick up. I really like the optimount mounts. The other mounts are just "meh".

Thanks for the info. All of the hardware is included. The only thing that I don know is what model of Zildjian hats are included. I'm just an intermediate player at best and my old cymbal pack was the inexpensive ZBT's that came with the kit.

I would likely want to mount the 10" over the bass and put the 14" on the stand if the stand can support it. I'm afraid that the 14" mounted on the bass may sit a little too high for me.

Looks like a Session Custom SRX in Marine Blue Fade. It would have 6-ply (7.5mm) maple shells with SuperHoops. Really nice drums that are basically equivalent to the Masters series except for the 8-lug bass drums. Probably 2001-2003 time period.
              I have lots of drums...

Thanks. The owners said there are no dings or scratches. That would be pretty sweet for a kit that old. The seller is the second owner and isnt sure how old the kit is. He did confirm that they are maple.
Can you clarify what you meant by 8 lug bass drum?

Simply count the number of lugs around the circumference of the drum. Your drum has 8 (pretty common with 20" bass drums). Some drums have 10.

Very nice kit. I have the same kit w 8,10,12,14,16 toms, 22” kick and 14x5 snare.
They look and sound wonderful (though I don’t really use the snare). I don’t think they offered a13” Tom for that series, but I’d have to dig out a catalogue.

Not sure where you are, but I bought mine, used, a few years ago for $650 ( just drums, Tom arms and Optimounts) in the Austin,Tx area. The used gear market around here still heavily favors buyers over sellers.

As mentioned, if the cymbals are decent, then the asking price for that kit is not out of line. I’d probably try to push it closer to $1k, unless you fear that you will offend them and wreck the deal.

                      Good Luck!

(Mine is the one in the front, set up lefty)

Thanks for the reply. I play "lefty" as well. From the pic, your 14" looks smaller than the one I am looking at. May just be camera angle.
