So a really good buddy of mine has a home studio in his finished basement. He had purchased some drum mics he wanted to try out and since I was also wondering how these bad boys would record, we got together yesterday for some quick experimentation. I especially wanted to see how my newly constructed 18X16 kick would sound so I brought it over along with my 14X8 Ludwig Supralite snare, the 8x8, 10X10, 12X10 and the newly converted 14X12 and 16X14 floors. Quick disclaimer: I'm no soloist, never have been and also way too rusty to share this with all the excellent talent out there but I wanted to hear what these babies could do. I'm a single kick pedal player so please excuse some of the sloppier faster triplets as I'm still getting used to coming off a 22" kick and the 18" is a whole different feel. That being said, I'm REALLY happy! What your hearing is basically a raw recording with some muddiness actually REMOVED from the kick (meaning some low frequencies! lol) I used clear emps and clear ambos on top and bottom of toms, coated vintage Emp on the snare with hazy ambo snare reso and Gibraltar 42 snare wires. On that magical little 18" kick? A perfect combo of a Remo coated PS 3 batter and 2 ply DFD black reso head with NO MUFFLING or PORT tuned as low as she'd go. The mics that captured these sounds were $25 each BRAND NEW with the exception of 2 of them: a $100 Beringer B1 on the kick and a $100 Shure 57 on the 8" tom! Please just take a sec and listen with some decent ear buds or headphones (not your phone or laptop) and tell me what you think.
