I also sometimes struggle with some of the descriptive terms applied to drum heads (and cymbals for that matter).
After using the Genera Resonant I can understand why they say it's brighter. Normally I would take "brighter" to mean higher pitched but I think "bright" and "dark" refers to volume.
Evans suggests Genera Resonant is a good reso for 2 ply batters and I understand that too now. My floor tom was louder and the bottom end accentuated! I couldn't lay off of it. I played it a lot more than usual just because I couldn't get over how good/big it sounded.
I should also point out that the Genera Resonant, unlike a Genera Batter, does not have a 2 mil muffle ring.
The Mylar film is 10 mil like a G1 but it's clear. G1 has a slight haze to it.
I'm gonna have to spring for a Genera Resonant for the 12" tom this week. I want it to bark like the 16 by the time the weekend gets here.

On the Evans page, they don't specify the thickness of the Genera Resonants. For some reason, I thought they were thinner than 10 mils. I think I may put my EC2's and EC Resonants back on my toms and see how I like the sound.

Tune Bot. Either use the suggested tunings (what I do) or look around and find some other tunings that you think will work well. I like the Tune Bot because it eliminated the very issue you posted about - I can always get a head in tune with itself, but the interval between the batter and resonant were off so the drum sounded bad. You don't get that with the Tune Bot - tune to the recommended tuning and the interval is right, and the drum sounds great every time.

EvansSpecialist (who used to post here from time to time) explained that the G1 and the Genera Reso are both 10mil, but the film is different material to give the Genera Reso a "brighter" sound.

Evans also just introduced a 7mil reso head if that floats your boat.

I tried the Reso 7 about 10 days ago. It's 7 mil, coated, and designed for short sustain and intended for close mic-ing in the studio or live. I did not like it.
I mostly play live but in small venues. Although my kick is almost always mic-ed and sometimes my snare, my toms almost never get mic-ed. That's partially why I like big, deep, loud, toms.
Next up is a G2 over the Genera Resonant. I've mostly used G2's as tom batters since I gave up on Remo 15 or 20 years ago and started using Evans heads but never with Genera Resonant. Evans sums up G2's this way, "The perfect blend of depth, sustain and attack make small toms sing and floor toms growl." I'm convinced the Genera Reso is the way fully realize that.

Cool. Let us know your thoughts after you re-head your drums!

Last night before playing I installed a Genera Reso on the 12" tom and I can tell you right now not even changing out the EC2 batters I am knocked out by these heads.
It was a jam night so I played the 1st set with the house band. The two toms, 12 & 16, were sayin' just what I wanted them to. Responsive with big, fat, round, pure tone!
There were no drummers when we started the 1st jam set but our bass player is multi-instrumental (guitar and keys as well) so he played drums while one of our alternates played bass.

Then, a young band from Michigan called The After Effect who moved here earlier this year showed up. Great band with a great drummer.
Next, one of our semi regular drummers walked in and finished out the night.
Point being, I had ample opportunity to hear the drums from out front played by three different drummers.
Maybe it's all in my head but the toms had more cut than with a G1 reso and sounded warmer and fatter as well. (Or, did I already say that? That's either age or living in the south too long.) Who knows, I may be trippin', but I hear an improvement.

It'll be a little while before I get some G2's but I'll post when I do. In the meantime, I'm surprised the EC2's are "gettin' out" this good.

Nice! Thanks for the review, Ron! It's always nice when you can get the sound you hear in your head!
