  • New SSC House Kit at Kings Bowl in Franklin, TN

I posted about the SSC I played yesterday elsewhere but I was originally going to post it here.

Got to my gig yesterday with drums in tow only to find a brand new 5 piece Session Studio Classic kit set up as the house kit. The matching snare was not SSC but a Sensitone Premium Maple that sounded impossible!
The kit was played the night before but that was the only time. The tuning on them was terrible.

I loosened all the heads and tuned from scratch. The toms and snare tuned up beautifully. Even one of our guitar players commented how great the kit sounded. I mean, he really took notice.
The heads on the kick left a lot to be desired for my taste.

It was a jam so I got to hear the drums out front too. The Sensitone Premium Maple snare was awesome! Every 2 & 4 was like ear candy.
The kick and toms looked like they had the same satin finish as the snare. Beautiful drums!

The only negative for me is I don't like virgin kicks. Mounting the rack toms off of cymbal stands limited cymbal placement once the toms were set. And, it's going to be the same pain in the butt each time I play there. And, just wait until somebody goofs up the stands which is inevitable.

I can't say enough great things about Session Studio Classic!
Seriously, just like that I'm considering selling my SLX Prestige Sessions in favor of a SSC904XUP/C adding a 16" floor tom. I love my kit but that's how much I liked the Session Studio Classic I played yesterday.

After reading about the snare, I would love to hear audio of it. Kit looks nice.

Here is a link to some video shot Sunday with a DSLR. There are a couple of places that almost give an idea of the character in that Sensitone maple snare.
Not our best performance of Murdered by Love but hey, they can't all be gems.

The SSC's are some fine drums. I had a 5 piece in platinum mist and they sounded fantastic. Pearl really nailed that birch/kapur recipie. I'd say go for it.

Nicer than any house kit I've ever played on! What a welcome surprise to show up to that!

Love my SSCs but I really like your Prestige Sessions too. I wouldn't sell those if I were you. Unique finish and those are classics at this point. Also, having just switched from an SK 2 to an EMAD on my bass drum batter, I can tell you the Evans head Sounds way way better. SK 2 just kills the tone and volume of the kick Evans has way more low end punch and tone and VOLUME!

I get to play the SSCs again tomorrow. I'd like to get there early enough to swap the Optimounts around so the air vents aren't facing out.

You're right about the Emad vs Superkick. Fatter and louder! I A/B'd them about 5 years ago on my MLX and EXR kits and came to the same conclusion on both. I'd have no problem playing out with a Superkick so long as the bass drum is mic-ed.

Hey Ron, greenbrier is blowing out mcx shell packs for 999. Thought that may interest you if you were considering and ssc.

You know how it is. Play a brand new kit and you think you need new drums. I should heed what IMF1 pointed out about the SPX being classic and approaching vintage age. He was also right about the finish, it really is a stand out.
I bet if I pop some new heads on the SPX kit I'll forget all about replacing it. I've never heard them with G2 batters and I'd also like to try out the G7 Resonant. I've read they add fat to the over-all tone.
I've mostly been playing 4 piece lately so just replacing the 12 & 16 inch heads won't be near as costly as replacing the heads on all 6 tom toms.
But, thanks for the heads up on Greenbrier.

Nice brother Ron! I just got a slightly used SSC this week and am using it at a block party gig in franklin tomorrow. I've been tweaking the tuning today and am really digging it
