  • New Reference Kit ordered!! #155 Scarlet Fade

I was going to do a Masterworks, but in keeping the cost down a little, I went with the Reference instead. I’ve always loved Scarlet Fade and I’ve always wanted it with black hardware. Sorted everything out with Shane at Drum Center of Portsmouth and we ordered the kit yesterday. Here goes the wait!

Those bass drums are going to be HEAVY, I mean really HEAVY. I hope you're not planning to move them frequently, as even occasionally would be a real drag. Good news is, Shane didn't really order anything yesterday, as Pearl is not open on the weekend to accept orders. Are you sure you want all shells this thick and heavy? Even the 18" floor tom will weigh more than what you might expect.

Matt, This will be my 4th kit in Reference specs. I’ve had 2 Masterworks kits built in Reference specs and this will be my 2nd Reference Kit.
Here are a couple of the kits.
And yes, Shane did order them yesterday. It was submitted and they will see the order submitted when Al and them get to work in the morning. I’ve done this a time or 5.

Thanks, Matt. You’re new Tama Kit sounds really nice btw. You still digging the 20” kicks?

Very much... they sound great in person, and on recordings. When people come in the room, they almost always mention something about the kick drums... either how powerful they sound, or how much punch they have. I think it's the thin bubinga shell that helps the 20" sound more like a 22". I wouldn't try a 20" with a thick-shelled model.

I had a hard time going from 24’s down to 22’s. I’m an aesthetics person and I just can’t get over how small 20’s look. It would drive me crazy just like different color woods in your drums drives you crazy.

I was concerned that the 20s would look small... but they don't on my kit... not to me. If I sat real high, or was really tall, they might look a little small. Peart used to rock twin 18s, I think... and they looked pretty small, but he is pretty tall.

Yeah. And he wound up being one of John’s Ginny pigs for the 23” bass drum on the Snakes and Arrows tour. The last tour looked like actual 24’s which I know he used on the A Show of Hands Tour with the white Ludwig’s with gold hardware. I think it was the Roll the Bones album that he went to one bass drum and switched from 24’s to a 22” kick. with the blue Ludwig kit. Then switched to DW drums for Test for Echo.

Very eye catching. I know the pic is not of your actual drums, but do I see a black Opti mount on the rack tom? Shouldn’t the Reference have the aluminum Opta mount?

That’s an older pick. The only close up pic I could find of Scarlet Fade with black hardware. This is a full kit pic. I love it. Click image for larger version

Nice! It looks like the red erupts from the black. The black heads with red lettering make everything pop. Very classy. Do you plan on using your rack? The picture looks so uncluttered with only the one double tom stand. I guess 6-8 cymbal stands would change that.
