  • My New (used) Reference Kit

I brought home a used Reference kit over the weekend. It was toured with in the past so there are a few battle scars on the outside of the shells but nothing that would be considered a big deal to me. The finish is Twilight Fade and the shell sizes are 22x18, 16x16, 12x09 and 10x08 (not shown). For the last 10 years, I've been playing a first generation Vision kit which was initially built using the same properties as the Reference line and it has always sounded great so I'm excited to dig into this kit to see what it can do.

Timeless, classic, gorgeous and incredibly nice drums!

The battle scars give it character and make it feel like it's YOURS now. That's awesome...

You went from a Vision to a Reference?! Holy cow! I've been playing drums for 30 years and I'm still at only the Masters level!

Here are a few updated pictures. The toms have Evans EC2 batter heads with Evans G1 reso heads and the kick has an Evans EMAD2 Clear Bass batter head with an Evans EQ3 Coated White reso head. Unfortunately, I don't have a Reference snare yet so I'm using my 14x6.5 MCX.

Very nice set up. I don't think you're missing out by playing the MCX over a Reference snare. Those super thick shells never did anything for me anyway. Different strokes for different folks.

I've had that MCX snare for 10 years and I can't say one bad thing about it. I'd like to try a brass Reference snare.

I owned one or two of those 20-plies and they didn’t appeal to me either. Too stiff of a shell. Felt like playing an anvil.
