  • Best sounding heads on Reference Kit?

    Just thought I would get everyone's opinions on what heads sound the best on the Reference kits. I've been using Evans Coated G2's on my toms, and an emad on the kick. What do you think sounds the best?

    This question has been asked many times on here. You should try a search. Tons of great info on this subject.

      It really depends on your playing style and desired sound. I have coated emperors (as I'm sure NOVA will suggest) now, but I am changing to clear emperors. You may want to pick a drum, and buy a couple heads for it. Then pick the sound you like best, then buy a whole set. It will cost you a little more, but at least you'll know the sound you're going to get.

            I like Clear Emporers over Clear Ambassadors for toms, emad and stock front on bass.
            Gotta love the drums. Nothing like a good bass drum-snare-hihat combo.

                Currently I'm digging the coated G2's over clear stock Ambassadors, with a SKI on the bass drum (ported stock reso).

                  I have tried every head out there except the Attack heads on my Reference kit. This is what I have found to be the best setup:
                  Clear Emperors over Clear Ambassadors on the toms. Evans GMAD on the Kick batter, and an EQ4 with the 5" hole on the Reso side.
                  Good Luck.

                    Hey there Harleydan!

                    I know you typed "every head", but I just wanted to see if you tried the clear Evans G2s over clear G1s (or Genera Resonants).

                    I use the clear G2s over Genera Resonants and love the combo, but haven't tried Remo tom heads (other than the stock coated Ambs over clear Ambs). I used to use Remo on my Tama kit, but switched over to Evans on that kit too.

                    If you tried the Evans, can you compare the two?

                      I put some coated G2's on last week and I'm still trying to get the sound I want. I can't get any depth out of them...it's like I lost whatever tuning ability I had to begin with.
                      pls no bully ;w;

                        Like others have mentioned, it all depends on what kind of sound you're going for. I personally have found I like the coated Remo Emperors over stock Ambassadors on the toms (though I might switch the reso heads to Aquarian classic clears soon..I've always loved those for resos), and Aquarian Super Kick II's for the kick drum batter, and I just threw my old ported Aquarian Force II's for the resos (they already had my band logo on em..lol). I've found I've enjoyed this combo so far. I definitely prefer the coated heads on those toms as opposed to the clears. But again, it all depends on what you're going for and what sounds good to your ears. I personally hate every Evans head I've tried..I honestly feel they're hyped up due to good advertising rather than making a good head. I don't feel they sound as good as Remo's or Aquarians. Good luck with your search!

                        EDIT: Read above comment, thats what I've found with every Evans head I've tried. But again, it all depends on what you like sound wise!

                          funny...I know it looks as though I said "Remo Emperors Emperors" in that last reply..but when I go to edit it, it shows as being what it should be:"Remo Emperors"..odd. haha
