Ok, to get on a more positive note, I've set-up my new Copperfire kit. First impressions:
The drums look and sound great. The sound is bright but focused. They are definitely loud and do project, but are capable of a more subtle style. I'm not sure why I read that Refs wouldn't make good jazz drums. I think they would sound very nice in a jazz setting-its all in how they are played. The toms really sing, with clear pitches.
I had the 12" tuned in a matter of a minute. It was the easiest to tune. The 10" took a bit more time, but I hit the sweet spot pretty quickly. The 14" floor required more effort, but once I got it-wow-really beefy for a 14". I had to use a relatively loose tuning on the batter head to get the low end I wanted. It seems to want to be tuned kind of high at even the minimum to medium tension. I haven't tuned the 16" floor yet. It came with an Ambassador batter. The rest have the stock Ref Emperors; I have a 16" Emperor ordered, to match. I also didn't need to spend a lot of time on the kick. It sounds great as it is, at medium tuning without any muffling. It has low end, but also a pronounced attack, just as advertised. Very happy with the sound, so far.
On to the pics....hey, I even found a dark copper colored area rug at Home Depot to use as a drum rug-$19.98
