Evans EQ Muffler?

Hey guys, I apologize in advance if this has been asked a million times... but I can't seem to find anything using the forum-search.

I just got a new 22x20 Ref kick and was wondering what the best way to get a little muffling in it would be. Have any of you used the Evans EQ Pad Bass Muffler? Is there something else I should toss in there? Oh, and I'll be using the stock heads for a while. Thanks!

The EQ pad is good, although it doesn't muffle a lot. It works like this... You put the EQ pad in against the reso head. You hit the batter, then the eq pad momentarily comes back towards the batter, off the reso. Then it falls back into place on the reso and muffles the excess ring. Works pretty well. I use it in the studio with an emad2 and it works out very well.

Cool! The guy at my local drum store suggested using 2 EQ pads, one for the batter head, and one for the reso head. I might give it a shot.

Possibly. I like the idea of how the tension on the reso/batter head "disappears" when you hit the kick, but comes back immediately after, to muffle the ringing. But, with a pillow you have constant tension against the heads, so the drum never gets to "sing." But, then again, I've never used the Evans EQ pads, so I'm not sure how fast and responsive that hinge action is anyway. It sounds good in theory though.

After doing a little investigating, looks like a lot of people go with the Aquarian Super Kick I / Regulator combo. Hmm, decisions decisions.

I highly recommend the Evans Emad batter head and I have an EQ3 resonant. I've really like having my bass drum open up a little more. There is nothing inside for muffling at this stage and I love it. It really compliments the toms nicely as well due to a bit more resonance and sustain in the kick (not too much). It becomes personal preference, but unless an engineer demands it, I will probably not ever put any pillows or the like inside my kick again. I just like the sound so much right now, that cluttering it up with a pillow or blanket just makes it sound like a totally different drum and out of context with the toms.

Same here..nothing in my kick..using the same heads as above on my 22x18 Ref..I use the larger of the two dampening rings. I tried the Evans EQ pad but decided that it was too much for my Refs. I do use a rolled up kiddie blanket in my 22x16 Swingstars..two totally different drums though =)

Same head selection and sound preference here. I have nothing inside the drum, and it sounds good acoustically as well as miked.
