Yeah, maybe try a head change or 2 before going through the hassle of selling?

Well, you can definitely prove resonant frequencies in a room. I was messing with the computer mic I had and EQs and when you adjusted the mid-range frequency you'd get a really boomy, hollow sound. Sound proofing would make life so much easier.

      edit: augh...ze quotes!

Agreed - hence, the reason for my previous question

You might want to try some of Veggy's suggestions, or even start with a plain old coated ambassador and add moongel or some other form of external muffling until you get the balance you're seeking.

Surprisingly enough, I thought the wood Ref sounded great tuned up right out of the box with the stock coated Amb over Amb snare-side and absolutely no muffling.

If I could get away with it, I would almost always go with a coated 1-ply head, but for durability (especially live), I like the coated dotted heads.

Of course there is another option:

Sign the inside of the shell and send it to Hitsme. That guy is desperate for a Pearl snare drum.

Try a Remo Diplomat snare side. That would allow you to have a higher pitch snare sound without having to crank up the batter head too much.

dude the emporer X is a very thick head, unless itstuned way tight, your not gonna get a good sound out of it, which inturn, would cause a high pitched sound. (I have 2 of them on my 40 ply vented and 10 ply vented) and they are VERY loud and pingy.... If your looking for duability go with a aquarian hi-energy. Its a 1 ply, but ith as a VERY thin coat of falam patch stuff on the whole head, and a power dot ontop fo it. There arent many people who hit as hard as i do, or hit harder than me. And i've had this head on for over 4 months. I love em..... Just wish evans made a comparable head.

*I just re-read your original post* The pinging your hearing is from differences in your top and bottom heads not being in tune, sorta how your toms cry when the batter is too tight or loose from the bottom head.... I found that contrary to most people (tuning bottom head higher) I tune both heads the same, and/or sometimes top head tighter, and i dont get that ping. But that X is def playing a role in it aswell.

I have the 5 x 14 steel ref with a coated emperor batter, ambassador hazy and 20 strand puresounds on it. I have the batter and reso head kind of tight and it sounds amazing. I also put a two inch piece of duct tape at the 12 o'clock position. My younger son, who never played the drums before, has been down there everyday now, because he loves the sound of the snare. Play around with the tunings, you will more than likely find one you really like.
