  • Sorry Masters

I finallly got around to setting up the MRX kit with evans G2s for a good comparison to the Refs. The verdict, no where near my furry friends, no where near! The MRX is nice to be sure but the difference in terms of character of sound and warmth is SUBSTANTIAL. I was really surprised at how much better the Reference kit sounded. If you are still trying to decide, go Reference.

And here's a couple of pics:

How do you like the Pearl reference RFB-1465 3mm rolled and welded brass snare? Just curious. I played it @NAMM, but not with a complete set. Was just wondering your honest comments on it. I own the reference 14x6.5 wood snare.

Well Al, since you asked for honest comments...I usually am quite DIS-honest!

But seriously, I like the RFB-1465 quite a lot, other than the weight of the thing. I will say that it is not substantially different from the wood 14x6.5 just a little more metal sounding or a touch less warm than the wood. I think quite frankly that I didn't need to have both. They are that close. Tomorrow I will put them side by side and have a go at it and give you a better reading.

Thanks mon, and for the other nice comments as well. Tomorrow though, the Refs are coming down off the shelf and going back on the rack where they belong!

Ok, did the side by side of the brass versus the wood 14x6.5. There is even less difference than I imagined. It's rediculous actually. I'm now wondering why I spent another 5 leaves.

Thanks dude. Keep in mind there is the wine red BRX that isn't in the picture, other than the 13" tom on the shelf. It's on a complete rack set-up at my bass players house (where I am right not mixing our 3 song EP).

I think you'd be much better off with a popcorn snare off to the side. The steel would not be that much transition to make it worth the effort or cost.

                          IMHO of course.

I am now torn between which one I want my next kit to be. I'm not really in love with any Reference finishes, but they sound better (or so you say). As for the Masters, I really, really, REALLY like Ocean Sparkle...but the sound isn't as good.
