Another head/tuning thread

Hey All

I Just picked up a Reference Pure in 10,12,16,22. (photos to follow)

Already have owned many Pearl kits in my life, including a 10 piece Professional DX, a MCX I currently own in 8,10,12,14,16,20. I also have 2 Reference snares in steel and the 20 ply maple/birch. And of course a free floating brass, piccolo, Demon Drives, hardware, and a bunch of other Pearl gear etc.

I was wondering your head choices and Tunebot settings if you know them off hand. I can tune drums, but after tuning up the racks last night I was surprised how much different the sweet spot was than my MCX. I am currently using g2's over g1's and thinking that might be the issue is that these drums don't love those heads. It's possible I was way off on my tuning too or I have a bad batch of Evans heads.

Other than that, the kit is beautiful, and with a bit of work the toms are singing now. Can't wait to record a few videos.

Listen through your monitors to really hear those things sing & rumble.

I'd say the heads that came stock on that kit worked really well. The bottom heads are shown to be Remo Ambassadors. The top ones are coated. If they are what I got on my Masterworks drums, they are just Coated Ambassadors. So, maybe try a single ply coated (or not) head on top.

For what it's worth, I am using Aquarian Classic Clear on top & bottom of all toms. They really sing. I think the next time I change heads I may go back to Response 2s (equivalent to Emperor/G2) on the floor toms to reign them in a bit, though.

Evans G2 coated over stock clear Ambassadors and Evans Emad coated with stock unported coated reso. Small pillow in the bass drum barely touching the heads and the small foam ring on the Emad. No damping on the toms.

Thanks guys. I always lean to clears for attack when playing punk/metal etc but from everything I see coated are a popular choice on these. I got these g2's singing. I put the tunebot away and just went by ear. It decently wants to be a bit lower than my MCX. I think I'll try coated heads on it next time though.

That's because the Pures are thinner than MCX's. Thinner shell has lower fundamental note.
