  • Swapping drums on standard configs

Just out of curiosity, I was looking at the configurations available for RP, none of them suit what I might want should the ability to purchase these drums arise, so then looked at the cost of the standard configurations vs buying the drums separately. According to the UK price list, the standard configurations are a LOT cheaper than buying the drums separately, so much so that for a 4 piece kit (BD, 2 toms and a floor tom) you pretty much get the floor tom for free. I was looking at the RFP924XSP @ £3407.00. The separates are about £1k more expensive, about the value of the floor tom (in practice shop prices are less...)

Is there any option to say swap out the floor tom for a different size and/or changing the depth of the bass drum, when ordering a standard configuration? Otherwise its down to ordering the drums separately (stupid expensive) or buying a stock config and trying to sell on the "free" drum(s) that's not wanted.

Probably something you'd have to discuss with your dealer rather than Pearl themselves - IF the dealer is willing to take the hit on the difference inc cost between one drum and another, or the dealer is high on the discount list at Pearl, for being a priority dealer or moves a lot of gear for example, then it's likely they can help you out. For example, for a regular low-volume mover like I used to be when I was in the trade, it wouldn't have been an option. But for someone like Wembley Drum Centre, who were a flagship dealer and moved a truck load of Pearl monthly, they'd have a bit of "schmoozing" power to get that deal done.

Thanks Thrush. Nearest place to me with any real clout is Andertons who I believe are fairly big in the Pearl game, not sure how they compare to WDC. I guess it boils down to seeing what the dealer can do at the time - they may even be willing to take the drums I don't want and sell them in the shop albeit for a price.

I'd try Graham Russell's shop as well, they do a lot of Pearl stock so may be able to help.

Thanks! Not a million miles from me, down the A3...this was just a curiosity post. I think my SRX kit will last me for the foreseeable future but you never know if I might come into a windfall. In which case I might go for a Masterworks.

          Wishful thinking...

Not sure how GR stacks up in the new-gear ranks, but he does a lot of used gear (which is where his shop was born from - my Rocket Shells snare came from him), but he's not cheap. Charges top whack on nearly everything (at least he does on used stuff) often above realistic asking price/value - even damaged repaired cymbals he lists for more than their non-repaired counterparts go for. He does have some nice stuff, but most of the time it's too dear, imo

I always thought this was stupid, so in other words if you don't like the pre picked set configurations you will get soaked. The drums should cost the same whether you pick your own sizes or get a pre configured shell pack. They should also offer shell packs with different sizes as well. I for one prefer a 22x16 kick, I am sick of everything always being the damm 22x18. Same thing with rack toms, everyone is on the 10x7 12x8 kick. I want 10x9 and 12x10
