  • Bass Drum Vent Hole Position

It wouldn't be a deal breaker but why is the bass drum vent hole not drilled opposite the badge side of the drum or in the 5 o'clock or 7 o'clock positions instead of being prominently displayed in the 11 o'clock position looking at the drum from the reso side? Granted, it's a beautiful grommet but it's like having a belly button on the side of your forehead. Personally, I don't think it's a clean look. It is, after all, a hole. A necessary hole but a hole none-the-less and because it's a hole should be played down i.e. less conspicuous. IMO
Also IMO the Ice Blue Oyster wrap is beyond words. That finish has infinitely grown on on me. Love it!

    Golden ratio!? 🙄
I own or have owned drums and cymbals made by every major manufacturer. My go-to kit is a DW Collectors series set.

Reasonable question. I do tend to agree with you.

They're not horrible but I would still prefer them on the underside, that's just me.

One more question. I know this thought would make some cringe but can the thinner Ref Pure bass drum shell handle a BB3 tom mount? I'm thinking 20x16.

Yes, we put BB3's on the 4-ply 5mm shell with no issues at all so putting a BB3 on reference pure should be no problem.

The MRV is the 4-ply 5mm shell for the Music City Custom line.

I actually love where the two vent holes are. I think it looks wicked.

I agree with the OP - I have them on my MMP and I reckon they're awful where they are. It doesn't help that they're massive, chunky, eye catching gold units either.

But the drums still sound good!

I'm with you. I'd have them in the same positions, but on the underside rather that top side. Firstly they'd be much more out of sight, no bad thing, secondly if you have toms over the bas drum, you won't have "air blasts" agitating the toms reso heads (I'm sure it makes next to no difference, but still) and thirdly if you mic internally, feeding the cable out through one of the vents would make much more sense with them on the underside.
