  • reference pure head choices

Hey there guys,I just got my reference pure kit this weekend, and am planning on picking up new heads. Was just wondering what everyone's favorite head combination Is for them, coated? Clear?remo?evans?let me know

Brand doesnt really matter that much. What kind of music do you play?

I usually play metal, but generally am not to fond of the heads geard towards metal, like pinstripes and ec2s. The reason I asked about brand is because I would like to try evans, but could never get a good sound from evans when on my mapex saturn kit.

For metal I'd go with either Clear EC2's or Clear G2's over G1's. If you want a really dead sound (and ugly look) you could try hydraulics over G1's

I can only speak for what I use on my Starclassics, but having an interest in the same genre, I'll put my two cents in. I use clear EC2's over Genera resonants. G2's over G1's (the stock Tama combination) gave a LOT of sustain, whereas the combo I'm using now reigns some of that sustain in without completely killing it.

The genara resonant, it's thinner correct?how does that change the sound?

Which heads came with the kit, and how does it sound with those? And how do you want your drums to sound in relation to how they sound with the stock heads?

The thickness isn't specified, at least on Evans' website, but it's not much different than a G1. The EC2, being a 2-ply, is great for attack and also shortens the sustain moderately. For the resonant, I just wanted a head that wouldn't negatively impact the sustain any further. The G1 would have been equally fine, I just wanted to try a different head.

The kit came with emperors over ambassadors, but yhe kit sat in the ship for 3-4 years, so there pretty dead. They sound good, but not as good as I know they could . perhaps I got the genera mixed up with a different resonant.

Resonant Glass maybe? That one's only 6.5 mil compared to 10 on the G1. I wouldn't know anything about that one though.

I have tried clear coated, clear, smooth white and suede emperors and suede emperors are by far the best. Coated were really good too. I never liked coated on my old kit but they are so good on these and suedes are even better. And effortless to tune. All above ambassadors btw.

I can only speak for what I play on my masters. I use Emperors over Diplomats and will never swap back. I remember reading an article interviewing Gavin Harrison on his drum sound and replicated the idea with my own kit. Essentially, a two ply head over the thinnest reso you can find. The big difference I can hear is more warmth and a tad less sustain (which can be adjusted by using a coating or not on the batter head). I also play rock and metal. If sustain is still an issue, moon gels will shut it up just fine.

                              Hi,

I use the Remo Vintage Emperor heads with clear Ambassador bottoms on my RFP toms and they sound great. I use the Powerstroke Pro with Powerstroke 3 Ebony on the kick drums and Emperor-X with hazy Ambassador on the snare drum.
