I heard that this has been done before but after much searching no luck!

So post pictures and a brief description of your IEM Racks for us all to enjoy and for inspiration!

NOTE: I don't have one myself but I would like to get one going in the not to distant future (for now its just wedges)

Don't have any photos, but I've just finished up a new live record/in ears/monitors rack quite recently! It's based around the Presonus StudioLive console, with a full split built in to the case! While technically not in-ears, I've used it to run ears, wedges, FOH in it's short life so far!

LOL, that is true... It's not a bad console!

But basically... The rack is a roadcase which houses the console, splitter, and a few units of outboard (Headphone amp, a couple of different pre-amps/comps/reverbs/EQs, it varys depending on the show.)

It's all patched and on casters so it's bacially, roll into a venue, patch into the house snake and away you go! It could also house wireless transmitters should a band want to go that route.

For live stuff, most of the processing is done in the board it's self, depending on the application that could be MONs or FOH. But generally, when I'm doing a record and mix down, I record using the board, then mix down at home in my mix room here! Purely because that's the workflow I'm used to, and there's all my plug and outboard here which I like using!

I'll try get photos up ASAP to better explain though!

Indeed! Well I've been working as a tech for a fair while now, both as a house tech and a touring engineer, so I know how to interface easily with the varying gear which different venues have!

The MAIN thing, when designing a monitor rig for yourself or a band which is touring through different venues, where you AREN'T bringing FULL production yourself, is the ability to interface SEAMLESSLY with whatever the house has. Your gear CAN NOT interfere with whatever the house has. You need to know your rig inside out, upside down, backwards, 100% and be able to get it running flawlessly. The house techs presumably have some kind of monitor system ready for you to use, and by bringing in your own it changes things for them which often they don't like! However, if your gear slips right in with theirs and there aren't any issues, then no one is complaining and you get your same monitors where ever you go!

Another point is ADVANCE ADVANCE ADVANCE!!! Get in contact with a venue or production company as early as possible and let them know EXACTLY what your bringing! Ask them what they will have so you can plan ahead! A short phone call a couple of weeks out can make a HUGE difference come show day! Suprises are generally not a good thing!


Often when I tour with a group on monitors we always travel with certain things...

FULL mic kit so our inputs remain the same in EVERY venue regardless of size. This ensures we have the same inputs going to the same places which means the monitor mixes are the same where ever we go!

FULL stage wiring, all our own labled subsnakes and other stage wiring to get from all the different points on stage to the monitor rig. Then it's a simple matter of patch looms into the house snake.

We will often tour with full mic stands or clips too for consistancy on that front too! It basically comes down to your budget, and how tight a production you want to run! There are obviously cases where you travel with EVERYTHING!! These shows are sweet! Same gear each night, often you use multipin connectors so instead of making upwards of 24 seperate connections it's just one big connector! You can really get a stage packed down in no time with a crew who knows what they are doing!

my rack is easy set up i have a shure psm 200 system then i run that thru a 2 channel 15 band eq that also runs my acoustic guitar ( when i play guitar on one channel) then as far as headphones i have

1. klipsch audio in ears ( just bought them on sunday better than the e2
2. shure e5s
3. live wire custom in ear got my impressions done at namm will get them in february

This is what I put together. Everything is self contained and I can plug right into the house mix with a 1/4" patch cable and a direct box. It's definitely nothing fancy, but it gets me where I need to go with loops and backing tracks put together in Garage Band. I pan all the tracks to one side, and I pan the click all the way to the other, and I only send the loop side to the board.

Thanks! I appreciate that. I've been working for a couple of years to bring the worship leader around to the idea that we would be "better" i.e., more consistent, if we started using a click for some of our stuff, and I have always wanted to supplement some of the songs we do the same every time with some more texture by adding things such as a 16th note shaker and throwing in a 16th patter tambourine during choruses. I picked up a MIDI controller right after Christmas and started to build those percussion loops. It took a while, but everyone is coming around and is actually appreciating the click and the loops.
