  • I've been here long enough and have debated this before...MW order in the works

I'm in the process of finalizing an order for a 10x8 12x8 14x14 20x16 MW. I'm going with the studio recipe after much deliberation and the kit will be adorned with black nickel ref pure lugs and fat tone hoops. I've been here (as a lurker since 08) since 2010 and feel like it's time to experience the MW process. Pearl's welcoming attitude towards openly allowing for objective discussion regarding other competing drum brands on this forum and their recognition of our fellow recently deceased member Lonny, were the deciding factors for me when coming to this conclusion. I nearly went with a Star Maple kit in ocean blue curly maple but opted for Pearl, mainly for my time spent on here over the years and the dedication the company (at least here on the forum) shows to it's customers. I'm looking forward to the process and need to nail down the finish but I'm trying to get this, in high gloss, over black limba.Click image for larger version

Hopefully Al can chime in when the finish is in the process of being approved and the order is placed and provide us some updates and feedback. These MW threads were always enjoyable to me as someone watching from the sidelines and I hope this one will be as well. Happy New Year and I sure hope 2021 is much, much better than 2020.

What's this gunna cost ya? Why a masterworks over a vintage kit?

About time we have a new MW thread to follow! Congratulations, you’ve made a great choice. While I no longer play Pearl, well except for an indestructible Demon Drive I’ve had since the initial release, since the early 2000s I’ve gone through four high end kits and several snares. Have nothing but good things to say about Pearl, and especially the customer service.

Very excited to follow this! Looks very similar to my the finish on my SCM, which is Emerald Pacific Walnut Burst. Also had no idea about Lonny, he was always a very nice guy. Rest In Peace to him.

Mike, thanks so much man! Hope all is well down there with you and yours HNY!

Healthie, it cost a few dollars hahaha. Do you ask about vintage because I opted for what compares to the old maple gum Gretsch kits? I went with this order for the finish, hw and sizing options and because I wanted to show some appreciation to Pearl.

Steady, thanks man, you have impeccable taste in drums and as a fellow Dales patron, I know you've been exposed to the absolute best the industry has to offer. Back when I was a fulltime, touring drummer, I played and recorded a Pearl Masters Custom. I started posting here nearly 10 years ago, because I special ordered a Ref snare and nearly bought a used MW in scuba blue tamo, before buying my first of 2 PHX kits. Those MW threads gave me tons of entertainment back then and were quite prolific. Here's to hoping we'll see some more in 2021. I've played and owned some amazing kits and have some favorites, so I'm keen to see where this one fits. The decision for me had the most to do with the great people like Al, that make sure that even us blue collar players don't feel insignificant with our needs as customers. Al better get a nice retirement when the times comes Pearl. You have no idea how many of us have been helped by him in the past. Your company owes him a lot of gratitude.

Mitch, thanks man and I may use the hue of your finish to help portray my idea when we get to that point. For now, the money has been paid and next week, I'll start discussing the details with my guy. And agreed about Lonny. Super friendly and welcoming guy.

I love Pearl drums and Pearl company. Even though all my drums are currently in storage, they will be released again some day.

Thanks Marv, I spent a few moments contemplating the details for sure. I almost went with a kit already in stock but seeing the tribute to Lonny today, made the decision easy for me.

Can anyone photoshop my idea of the blue/green burst with black nickel hw onto this image. I appreciate the effort if so.

Good for you Jamie, glad you're about to embark on your own Masterworks journey. I've now gone through the process 4 times (2 kits and 2 separate add-on orders), and every time has been a great experience. Sure the downside is waiting, but you're gunna have that with any custom order. I have placed 3 of my 4 orders since Pearl instituted their new 90 day policy of Masterworks orders being completed, and I can attest to the fact that they have held true to that policy. The old 4-6 month wait time got to be a little long, but now it seems as if time flies by before your order shows up. The whole process is exciting, especially if it's your first order - from requesting samples and receiving them, to filling out the order form and submitting, to waiting, and then finally taking delivery of your kit. I've acquired a lot of drum gear over the years, but to me there is nothing more thrilling than seeing those boxes with "Masterworks" printed on them show up and unboxing them. It's like Christmas morning

Love the finish you're after, that will look amazing over black limba. And I think the black nickel hardware will really set it off and make it pop. The Ref pure lugs are a classy touch as well. And although there were some who criticized Pearl for offering gum wood as an option in their Masterworks and Masters line, after hearing lots of sound clips and watching video demos, I think they knocked it out of the park by offering it - that studio recipe truly sounds amazing.

Can't wait to see your updates along the way. Congrats again and Happy New Year.

Happy New Year Chris! Hope you're well. I'm pretty stoked and might have to hit you up for some MW advice. Glad to hear you've had such positive experiences with MW and Pearl. It's been a while since I've owned a Pearl kit and that was a Ref which I really couldn't get comfy with. I owned the old Rectangular badged Masters Custom 4 ply reringed shells and they felt great to play. I agree on the videos, which I've watched quite a bit and If I didn't go with the Studio recipe, I would have chosen the Urban recipe. I just realized they specify which HW to use with each ply layup but I'm going a different route. Hope to have some progress in the way of submitting an order and request for samples on Monday. Good to hear from you!

Here is one that is closer to your colors but not really the burst you are looking for. Best I can do with limited skills. A pro could do what you want, but would take some time.
