  • New 2020 Masterworks Kit - Scarlet Sparkle Fade

Hello everyone. Long time since I've been active here. With the current circumstances going on in today's world, I have a lot of free time on my hands at the moment. I figured it would be a good time to setup some drums and take some photos. I started with my snare collection which can be seen here.

And now for my brand new Pearl Masterworks kit! Many of you are probably familiar with my first Masterworks kit in Blue Sparkle Burst with Halo Flakes. Not to worry, that kit is still in my possession and all is well with it (see pics below). I have been enjoying that kit for going on 5 years now... hard to believe how time has flown by. Since then, I joined a new band and made the decision at the time to purchase a separate gigging kit so that I could leave my blue babies setup at home to play on, and to keep them in good shape. I purchased a new Tama B/B kit to gig with, and it has served me well ever since. One thing I could never get past was that the sizes just weren't ideal for me (odd sized floor toms and a smaller kick). It just lacked in ways that I knew my MW kit could deliver on. So back in November, I made the decision to pull the trigger on another MW kit which would be used solely for gigging. Yes I know, you're probably thinking I'm crazy for spending such money on a high end kit just to gig with, and have it potentially get damaged, etc. But I told myself that they're just drums, and I should play what I'm truly happy with. And, with going the custom route, I was able to order the exact sizes and configuration I wanted, as well as getting to chose the shell makeup as I did with my previous MW kit.

So I figured, why fix what isn't broken? I decided to go with the same maple/mahogany blend that I used on my blue kit. However I decided to up the ante and go rock n' roll with the sizes. The band I play in is a country/rock country act (think Justin Moore, Randy Houser, Luke Combs, Blackberry Smoke), so I wanted sizes that would fit the bill. I've always been a huge fan of Rich Redmond (drummer for Jason Aldean) and his setup. So this setup is very much based off of his configuration. For the finish, I knew I wasn't going to be able to top the blue sparkle finish I had previously come up with, nor did I want to. Pearl hit that finish out of the park, and it's still my favorite. I decided to go with something a little more streamlined for this kit, not trying to out-do the last one while opting against an Artisan finish due to the price hike. The finish is Scarlet Sparkle Fade, derived from the stock finish Scarlet Sparkle Burst. I opted against the halo flakes this time, as I said I wanted to do something a little different and didn't feel like I needed the extra sparkle with the halo flakes. I adjusted the amount of black burst slightly and got it to where I was happy with it. I've also been craving black nickel hardware ever since Pearl made it an option a few years back, and knew it would look killer with this finish. Reference lugs and die cast hoops all around.

So the order was placed in November, and true to their word Pearl came through and had it to me within 3 months in mid February! I guess MW kits now ship with a signed certificate of authenticity - pretty cool! I've been gigging with it since, and just now am finding the time to unpack them and set them up for some proper photos. I have to say I'm not thrilled with the quality of the photos... before I bought my current house, I was spoiled with having my drums setup in a room that had lots of natural light pouring into it which made for great photos. Here, although I have a great space in the basement dedicated to just drums/recording/band practice, I decided to install some LED track lighting to try and light up the space as best as possible. But with low ceilings, the lights are very close to the drums which can give off some harsh reflections and capturing of the lights themselves in the photos. Either way, I'm glad to have the space that I do and feel very fortunate.

Glad to be back after a bit of a hiatus, and it's nice to see a bunch of familiar faces around here

Sparkly!!!! Gorgeous!! Two beautiful kits. I love the specs for the new kick. I’m a bit partial to 24x16 kicks. Well done

I think those are 2 of the best looking Pearl kits i've ever seen, you're a lucky guy! Great to see you back around these parts Chris, the new rig looks great, if you're gigging it, i'd highly recommend the protection racket AAA cases for it, keep those babies safe. I think your blue kit ranks as my all time favourite masterwworks kit, for both configuration and finish. As you put it, Pearl hit it out of the park. I am curious as to why you didn't go with the golden ratio vents or to stick with the tube lugs that the blue kit has, over the BRLs, though I think both would look killer on that kit.
More drums than you can shake a stick at...

Kit looks great. Do you only play the gong drum? It's the only one I see with stick marks on it.

Thanks so much! Yes, I have them outfitted with a whole set of PR cases I decided to keep the air vents the same color as the rest of the hardware on this kit, I just thought they would blend in with the black fade a little better. That being said, they are in the golden ratio position. Even though I kept the shell recipes the same, I wanted to do things a bit different with everything else, hence the hardware color and lug style. I figured the Reference lugs would look a little beefier with the larger sizes.
