Die Cast or Suer HoopII?

On the OCDP site they say they do not recommend die cast hoops for toms. They say it diminishes the resonance of the drum.

So does this concern Masterworks as well? Tell my your thoughts.

BTW - I did a search, but couldn't find comparisons for Masterworks. So please, ... your opinions would be very welcome. Later.

What's the difference between SuperHoop and SuperHoopII?

It seems to me that diecast hoops would keep the drum more evenly tuned (since they won't flex as much), but I don't have any experience with them on toms, so I have no opinion (yet).

Die Cast are better if you want a more focused sound. Triple Flangd are better for more open sound.

That makes die cast sound bad. Yes, they may slightly decrease resonance, but they offer more attack, better definition between hits on fast rolls, and better tuning stability. IMHO they also look better/more expensive. Notice how most, if not all pro level kits have die cast?

I played a masters custom extra with flanged hoops. They were very resonant, but to me, the sound of the tom being hit was not definitive, like you couldn't tell EXACTLY when it was hit, kind of like a floor tom, but this was a 12".

Instead of a BAMMMmmmmm it was a whooooommmmmm.

die cast hoops are heavier than triple-flanged hoops, so obviously, theyre gonna choke the sound a little.

I too have been curious about this same subject of lately. Yes, practically every professional kit has Die-cast hoops, BUT the most of them DON'T have Sound focus rings (reinforcement rings, whatever...) Then you also have the influence of different skin heads. See, I've got a kit in the works: MMX 8x10, 8x12, 9x13, 12x14, & 14x16Flr. I want the most versatility in my drums as possible, with great sensitivity (thus reason for those shallow toms), but with a dark/open sound.

You see, I like Remo Pinstripes, but if the reinforcements rings and Die-cast hoops already contribute so greatly to sound focus, then are my drums going to be so focused that they sound like a thud? Because of this, I've been experimenting with some modifications by using clear Emperors on the batter side of my toms and coated diplomats on the bottoms. Would this achieve the sound I'm looking for?

The diplomats are really thin. Anything ambassador capitible or similar should be fine. to be honest IMO, with the rims that you have you could run it wide open. Most people forget that once you play live with a guitar player a lot of your highs get lost. I think the emperors on top and ambassadors on bottom will be a good sound for you. if you need a little more "muffling" throw on some moon gel. you should need any more than that.
