20 ply on a 13" shell means you're only going to have an 5x11 air chamber inside the drum. Why not just get a 4x13 6-ply shell and have a little more tone to the drum? Either way, it's going to give you a pretty high fundamental -- close to making a piccolo out of a Reference.

Ok we can close this thread...I ended up picking up a 5x14 steel Ref. snare...and my god I can't imagine finding a snare that sounds as good as this!
