  • MCX 14"x11" Rack Tom vs. 14"x14" Floor Tom

Was wondering if anyone has any experience with the 14" rack tom and how close it would be in tuning range to the 14" floor? I'm thinking almost identical.

I have 14x11 on the Refs and 14x14 on the MCX. Haven't tested them against each other but depending on tuning the 14x14 could have more bottom end yes?

I had a 14 x 11 on my SRax and now have a 14 x 14 on my MRX. I used to play a weekly gig on a house MCX with a 14 x 14 and I prefer the deeper drum because it has more body. In a mic'd situation it won't matter as much but there is a difference.

Haha, you'll be fine, man...just stick a Beta 52 under it and nobody will know the difference!

I've owned the BSX 14x11 and 16x13 mounted toms instead of floor toms, and I must say that floor toms with air suspension feet "feel like" they have close to twice as much body and depth compared to the mounted toms. Part of it is the depth of the shell... and the other part is the way floor toms react with the floor when you hit them... this is just my opinion. When I get my shallow Tama Superstar Hyperdrive floor toms (14x12 and 16x14) I will let you know how they feel compared to the BSX mounted toms.

Matt speaks truth. My SRX toms gained half again as much body when I drilled them and put the legs on.

Thanks all for the input. The reason I ask is I was thinking of adding the 14"x11" to my kit but didn't want to take the leap if it will be too close to the 14" floor. I can get it for a good price but don't want to do it if they will be too close which will render the rack useless to me as I always play with 2 floors.

So what's the consensus-thumbs up or down to adding the 14" rack to the kit-or at least the option to add it if I want-kind of in reserve?

So what you're saying is, you have the 14"x14", and you want to add the 14"x11", right?

Not the same kit I know but I have the same situation with my Ref 16's. I have a 16x13 rack tom and a 16x16 floor tom. I play them next to each other and they sound so different, it's like having 16" and 18" toms. I've recently been considering whether I need them both, but I think they are both useful and have a place.

After much thought I am going to pass on the 14"x11" and stick with my original plan which is to get the two Masterworks concert toms to match the kit (6"&8"). With the 13"x10" due any day now that will give me eight toms with the two floors so that will do. Plus my OCD doesn't like the idea of looking at a 14" tom mounted over a 14" tom.

The 14" and a 13" are posted on EBAY. Buy it now/BO. I offered $300 and they countered with $325 with free shipping for the 14" which is a deal.

Here's the links to the toms if any one out there with a QBS kit is interested: (I'll start a new thread with them in it and a better title too.)

Personally, I like that idea better too, the concert toms I mean. 8 toms means no shortage on fills, and with the concert toms, you'll be more than able to go "Neil" as much as you like. I look forward to the pics.

I have a 16" x 14" hanging tom and an 18" x 16" FT and they are a great team. I bought "just a leg" but haven't put it under the 16" yet. It's not necessary but might help me set up more quickly.

If I had a 16"x16" FT and 18"x16" FT on the MCX kit it would have been a no brainer and the 14"x11" would already have been bought!

My original intent was to not hang big toms on this kit- it was just the allure of a solid deal and some EBAY bucks burning a hole in my pocket that had me looking at the 14" rack.

As per my sig I have a 14"x12" over 16" & 18" floors on my WX so I'm set for big toms if I am in the mood.
