Remo VS Evans VS Aquarian

Hey Everyone,

Thought I'd start a little discussion and get some insight into what everyone's general opinion is when comparing Remo to Evans to Aquarian drum heads on Masters kits.

I want to get that right head combination. I was always Remo, then jumped ship to Evans... and now Long and McQuade is bring in Aquarian heads now.

For my MCX (6 Ply Maple) I love coated Emperors over clear Ambassadors on toms. Bass has a PS4 Batter with Coated White Pearl Logo Reso.
On my Exports I'm putting on an EMAD2 this week with a new Black Pearl Reso and I have the new EC2 SST's over stock resos on those toms.
The theory is to stop unwanted ringing on the Exports; and let the Masters Sing!
There are other combos people will share.

For the kit you have, I have always liked Evans clear G2's on top and clear G1's on bottom. The new clear Gplus are great on top too.

So many good combo's. I'll tell you this--Stay away from a premuffled head on those 4 py shells with rings. They are designed to be punchy with a shorter sustain so having a premuffled head will kill the tone and sustain both. I have made that mistake with Evans EC2's. Never again! Not to say you won't love 'em, but that dead boxy sound wasn't what I was going for.

Boy, these "discussions" always go round and round. Then come to the conclusion, you just have to try them yourself. There are a TON of threads on this topic. What works for one, may not work for the other.

We can all tell you and describe the sound you'll get with certain head combinations, but wether you like it or not, that's up to you.
Currently I'm playing clear ambs over clear ambs on my kit.
And Emad over ps3 on kick.
The kit sounds great that way to me, but maybe not to you.

I guess I am the official Aquarian lover of the Masters section. Aquarian are great heads. If I didn't play Aqauarian I would go back to Remo as I have never liked Evans heads. A lot of guys like Emperors on top and the Aquarian equivalent would be Response 2's. Classic Coated/Clear (single ply), Super 2's( 2 very thin ply's)and Super Kicks are all great heads. Aquarian have a very warm tone and their coating (on coated heads) tends to be very durable. The heads themselves are also quite durable and don't seem to stretch and dish out as much or as quickly as Remo. They hold their tone and sound good for a very long time. I like the Modern Vintage which simulate calf skin. I posted a drum solo a few threads down you can listen to. I say give Aquarian a try!

Hey Jutt8, same mistake I have made, as I'm sure you have read around the forum. I am going to use the EC2's for now as they aren't too terrible and I don't have the funds to go out and put down for new heads again. But next time around I think I will do the clear G2's over G1's.

Thanks for that. I understand it's about preferential choice and to one is not the same to another, however your response is what I was looking for. I may look into those Response 2's. What would you put underneath the Response 2s?

Cool, man. Classic Clears (Ambassador/G1 equivalent). I think they also make some heads called High Frequency that are thinner like Diplomats.

Of the 3 brands listed, my choice is Remo. I've experimented with all 3, and to my ears, Remo sound the best. They have a true, full tone, with plenty of resonance and sustain.

O.K. that's as far as I'm going, before I get myself in trouble.

It is all about personal preference. There is no right or wrong choice.

I love Aquarian heads and would continue to use them if they bloody fit properly and if I wasnt in the mood to experiment with something new.
Im thinking of giving Evans another crack...maybe Coated G2's over Clear G-Plus on the toms and a GMAD on the kick?

remo vs evans remos have to set sound horible out of the box but last longer evans are pre set so dont stretch them as you change heads evans coating lasts longer but is not noticible expt on a snare drum

I had Coated G2's over Clear G1's before and I could never get the desired tone out of them (Probably because of the coated, I may try the G2 clears some other day) but for now I'm really hooked on the 1ply over 1ply. I have a Clear Ambassador over Clear G1 and I get such a full and resonate sound with the right amount of attack. Hope that helps if you plan on trying out the 1ply batter heads! Where I live, Evans G2 = $11.25 where Remo Emperor = $15.25, quite a significant difference but it's all about preference! Aquarian makes some **** fine heads but where I'm from, they maybe have about 14 heads to choose from and its random, you'd see a 10" super 2 and then a 12" studio-x. In a nut shell, if the store has the Aquarian heads you want, GET THEM! who knows when they'll have another shipment
