Sighs, yeah..... I am aware of that. Sick of the shallow rack tom fad and want something different.

Are you a tall guy (considering the size of the bass drum and those deep toms)?

6 ft tall..... I also offset my toms so I can get them lower, I could also do 10x9 12x10 to make it work

You sure come up with the best custom stuff using all Pearl stuff!! I especially like any MCT stuff, the best shells Pearl makes!

I recently saw one of the MCT kits at a store and fell in love with the beautiful sparkle finishes that are available in this series. I decided to pick up a few of the shells and make a little custom kit in the "Martini" sizes (since Pearl doesn't offer a kit like this). These drums sound fantastic (considering the small sizes).

14x12 kick drum (with custom SP70 spurs, BT-3 tom mount, and built-in JG-16 riser).
          13x10 floor tom
12x5 Sensitone Custom Alloy steel snare drum (vintage)
          8x8 tom

** I experimented with putting wood hoops on the little kick drum but it made no difference in the sound. Thus, I left it "cafe" style with the Super Hoops. I'm using Remo P4 Coated (with dot) for the batter head and Remo P3 Renaissance front head with 4" hole. This combination nicely focusses the sound with no internal muffling needed.

** The toms have Remo Emperor coated for batters and Remo Renaissance Ambassadors on the bottoms. Snare drum has Remo P3 Coated (with dot) for batter and Remo Ambassador Hazy for the snare side.

** The Pearl Flat Base hardware is upgraded with 1030 gyro-lock tilters and SBA-1 snare basket adapters.

Thanks for the nice compliment. I appreciate it.

I'm working on another new project with the MCT shells ... stay tuned.

Very nice work and a really cool looking kit. Whatever you did to the bass drum spurs really made them "splay" nicely. Pearl 18" bass drums have a wide spread. I also used Renaissance head for a while on an 18" floor tom conversion and it really did sound nice.

                Thanks.

The key to positioning the SP70 spurs (on any 8-lug bass drum) is to put the lower of the three mounting screws in line with the lugs in the 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock positions. This enables them to angle correctly and also lift the drum high enough to center the Pearl pedal without the need to shorten the angle of the beater shaft.

I recently started using the Renaissance heads for the resonant sides of all my drums. They sound good, and I like that they are translucent.

                  Erik,

I thought about using an 8x7 tom for this kit but there is very little space between the lugs to the sparkle finish gets obscured. I like how the 8x8 tom looks with this kit because it shows more of the finish between the top and bottom lugs on the small tom.

I think Sonor got it right with the first edition when they used the 8x8 tom.
