The Matte Black is a great finish. It looks classy and won't go out of style.

                    Cuznred,

Which shell pack did you get? That's a great color.

I plan on putting together a little gigging kit with the MCT matte black shells.

From there I plan to special order the 13x11 and the 15x13 to use as hanging floor toms and probably the 14x14 to go with the 16x16 if I decide to use that. May also get a shallower 22 down the road as well as they are easier to get into my car. with that I can have a variety of set up ups depending on the gig and room.

The sky is pretty much the limit with those sizes
                      Cuznred,

You think like I do. I always buy a bunch of sizes so I can put them in different configurations.

It's too bad some of the sizes have to be special ordered. But, I guess it's nice that they offer the full range of sizes at a good price (compared to Masterworks or Reference).

                        Cuznred,

i agree. I put a Masterworks order in for some of the same Matte Black #124 finish drums back in September. The only reason I didn't just go with the MCT shells is because there's no variety of snare drums. I like having 12" and 13" snare drums, so I went with MW for the main kit.

However, I ordered some of the stock MCT shells in the Matte Black in order to make some custom smaller set ups. At least they will match my MW kit. I should be getting the shells this week and then I'll have to do some custom modifications on them.

One of the builds I'm planning with the new MCT shells will be a "Martini" kit with 14x12 kick, 10x13 floor, and 8x8 tom. I have a 5x12 Sensitone Steel snare drum that I'll use along with it. It will be about 1/3 the cost to do this special kit with the #124 MCT shells than it would have been to add it to a Masterworks order.

I've always thought it would be fun to do a "Martini" kit but wouldn't use it enough to justify a MW investment. I"m hoping the wife will like it enough to let me set it up in the living room with some "silent" heads and "quiet" cymbals. The matte black will match some of her decorating ...

It's cold where I live, so it might take a month or two for me to be able to get out in the shop and do the custom work. I just wanted to pick up the shells while they are still in stock. I wouldn't be surprised if they replace the matte black with piano black after NAMM in January. I'm sure the matte black won't stay in stock very long.

Fortunately, Pearl also makes 14" marching bass drum hoops in the same finish so I'll be able to use those to match the 14x12 tom for the little kick drum. I also have to order some custom bass drum heads from Remo since they don't stock standard bass drum heads the 14" size. It will take a couple of months to get those from Remo too.

Years back, Al Percival told me that the #124 finish made for non-Masterworks drums does not match the #124 finish applied to MW drums. Do you think that has changed, or do you think the difference is minor?
