Washing hardware

Every couple of years I like to take all my hardware out and give it a wash down with soapy water and a brush. Anyone else do this?
I also had to hit a few of the rust spots and potential rust spots with some soapy aluminum foil.

I clean my hardware with a cotton towel and a little window cleaner. Works great and I don’t have to hang my hardware on a clothesline. Those stands do look mighty clean though.

I give my hardware a good clean every once in a while, but generally I do not leave finger prints on my hardware and they stay in a relatively controlled environment so rust is of minimal concern. I have some hardware from the early/mid 90's that still looks new today.

What does soapy aluminum foil do?

It's said that aluminum polishes... I've never tried it.

What does soapy aluminum foil do?

Removes surface rust from chrome. It's an old hot rodder trick. It's strong enough to remove rust but pliable enough to not scratch chrome. I remember a neighbor guy using foil on his chrome bumpers when I was a kid.

But to rinse do you take a garden hose to it? Seems the inside of every joint would hold moister unless you completely disassembled.

Yes, I rinse with a garden hose then pick it up and spin around real fast to sling off the excess water, then rub it all down with a clean towel. I would totally disassemble it all, but we all know what a pain in the *** it is once you get your stands set the way you want them, to have to start all over again. I did hit the some spots with the Silicone based WD-40 and let them sit in the sun for a while to finish drying off, then brought them in.

Yes, I literally did spin around to sling off the access water. I wanted to get as much of the water off as possible so my drying towel wouldn't get wet and leave water spots on the chrome.

Too funny. But hey, if it works! I myself hate cleaning stands. But I love shiny chrome! Hardware on drums I really enjoy cleaning up but stands are dreadful. They do look really good. Congrats!
