  • Drum Heads

hey guys we got our music for next years marching show and were already starting to work on it. I'm sorta the "maintenence guy" for our battery and i can't really decide what heads to use, mainly for snare. We are all set bass and tenor-wise but the snares are lacking. We have those ludwig free floaters, I forget the exact name ( we are marching 3 if that matters). We are going for a drum-core style sound and I read somewhere that we should tune to A for snares. We only have one black max left and 4 Evans MX5 snare side heads. I know really nothing about these. I was thinking maybe evans hybrids or gold series. Maybe even more blackmax's or whitemax's. I need your opinion. Thanks

If you don't know, I would highly suggest you let your caption head or battery technician to do this type of work. I can understand why you would want to do this type of work on the drums. To achieve the best sound possible right? Well, I would watch what your caption head or battery technician does to the drums to gain some valuable tips first before digging in head first.

^I agree completely. if you have a tech, let him handle it.

But if you dont, I'd go for white/blackmax with MX7 bottom. And about tuning to an A.. that'll work, but just tune to what sounds good to you man.

Well, I also suggest you leave it to your tech/percussion caption, but if you don't have one you can start with the PDF file that I've attached.

For that "modern drum corps sound" everyone seems to strive for, you'll want the WhiteMax or Black Max. Those MX7 heads will be perfectly suitable resonant (bottom side) heads.

Just make sure tunings are even across all the drums on top and bottom, and the guts are in tune with each other.

Another good combo, if you feel confident enough to try it, is the Black Max/White Max over a Remo collarless Ambassador. As much as I think the kevlar bottom heads sounds good in a line situation, I find that having a mylar head just gives the drums a little more tone, resonance, and just a little more body to the sound of the drum. As good resource for tuning and head selection is at Evans website, they have a video with Mike MacIntosh (caption head and arranger for the Bluecoats D&B Corp) where he goes through basic tuning principles for marching snares.

The Evans MX7 is discontinued but they still make the MX5 which is thinner and more responsive.

            I personally like Cybermax/falamII

But I am thinking about switching to Evans Gold standard/MX5

Either way... for high school I would recommend a kevlar bottom head. Mylar takes too much to maintain and you end up losing tension rods out of the bottom.

Our captain doesn't know a thing haha. I completely understand where you're coming from, but really no-one else knows anything. I've been reading everything I can find out about tuning, I'm pretty confident in knowing my stuff. I went in with the captain last night and tuned all the gut snares. I was talking with my band director today and he says he only wants black heads because white heads look "sloppy". I can't believe he would rather sacrifice sound over looks, especially in this situation. He is very difficult.

As mentioned above, Cybermax's are also great heads!

The best head, IMO, is a premier Tendura. However, they're no longer made. If you can snag some of those... definately do that. And let me know where you got them lol.

Well, the BlackMax is gonna sound the same as the WhiteMax basically. And both of those can tune up just like a white Evans aramid head. You're not really sacrificing any sound for the look of black heads.

I dont like the blackmax anyway...it gets too hot. That was the reason I switched my line from black to whitemax's this last year.

Hopefully I won't be offending anyone by this statement but I really think Remo's marching heads lack tremendously. Evans heads I think amazing heads for marching drums. I would definetly go with the MX5 (white) for the impact head and the MX7 Gold for the resonant head. And regarding your band director's statement about white heads looking sloppy. You are going to get much more response and tone out of the MX5 heads than any blackmax that has ever been manufactured. You should definetly try to persuade him different on that situation.

Um...the MX5 and The MX7 are both bottom heads.... The MX7 was discontinued in 2006. The White Evans tops are either the MX White, or the Hybrid White's.

As for the Remo/Evans thing....I've used both...alot...with schools I have taught. In terms of sound, the Remo's are best for what I am into, ut if your looking at durability, I will say that the Evans Heads hold up extremely well. If I had to pick the best sounding Evans combo for me, it would Hybrid Grey top/Hybrid Bottom. Remo setup would be BlackMax Top/FalamII Bottom

Sorry for that statement. I meant MX white for top heads. I had no idea the MX7s were discontinued. I get all mine off interstatemusic and they are still in stock there (we usually only get about one set of six a year so that might be the reason)
