  • Marching help

I am a senior in my high school, and this is my second year marching tenors. My first year I wasn't as good at marching, but despite my improvements in marching I now get pains in my ankles and my arches. Should I be concerned or is this a fairly normal thing? I'm not talking about a little soreness, I am having really bad cramps and sharp pains. Help?

What your getting is the musscle growing. I would not say to be worried about it until mondain events get harder to perform. Remember to always stretch and work your muscles when your not at band. Drink water as well, lots of it.

Thanks, I just wanted to be sure I wasn't doing anything actually damaging.

As high as possible? Are you talking about getting up on your toes? That is not the only school of thought on crabbing and going backwards. Watch the Cavaliers, they do not go on toes. Doing so raises your center of gravity and causes balance issuses.

Not everyone marches that way. Your school might, as did my old school, but there are many different ways to march. It's all on the hands of the particular director.
