  • My CZX "Custom Z"

Yesterday, I fully reskinned my CZX set with Remo Renaissance heads, and subsequently set it up to try out a new setup that I intend to play on next weekend in the recording studio. I had already started breaking it back down again (hence no crashes in this setup), when I realised I hadn't taken any pictures of the setup, both for you gearheads of the PDF, and for reference, should I need such when setting up again in the studio.

This setup is a two-up, one-down offset config, which is a departure from my gigging setup (13x11T, 16x16F, 24x16B). This config is 12x10" and 13x11" toms on a C-950 ultra-wide stance cymbal stand for stability, 16x16" floor tom and 22x16" bass drum. The toms (10x10" not in this setup, 12x10", 13x11" and 16x16") are skinned with Remo Renaissance Emperor batters and Remo Renaissance Ambassador reso's; the 14x6.5" snare with Remo Renaissance PowerStroke 3 batter and Remo Renaissance Ambassador Snare Side reso and the bass with Remo Renaissance PowerStroke 3 batter and reso (with a 5" Bass Drum O).

So far, I am very much liking the Renaissance heads, although I only did a quick tune by ear, to get a feel for the new heads. They're now in the storage room with the heads cranked, so I can tune them properly once in the studio. The Renaissance heads are nicely toned down, warm-sounding. The bass is unmuffled, without becoming boingy. And I must say, the looks really complement the finish of the Custom Z quite nicely.

Next on the list for this kit is a tune-up with FatTone hoops, stainless tuning rods and shouldered washers. When I get to that stage, it'll also be about time for a good clean and polish.

I am hoping to take delivery of its twin, the SZX kit, the week after the recordings. That kit will probably be skinned entirely in Remo Ebony heads (same Emperor/Ambassador/PowerStroke setup as the CZX) and fitted with MasterCast hoops for punchiness.

Thanks. I'm well chuffed with the Renaissance heads, I must say. They look the bee's knees on the Champagne CZX, and the sound could well be an AC/DC song title: big, round and warm.

When I got back from the studio last night, I learned that the SZX has arrived, so next up is giving that purple monster a good clean and reskinning it completely (although it did come with a barely used Evans GMAD bass batter as a little bonus). I'll be using the SZX for my next recording session, which may be a while from now, sadly.

Snare drums I brought to this session:

CZX Custom Z 14x6.5" (Remo Renaissance PowerStroke 3 over Renaissance Ambassador Snare on 8-ply maple), Vinnie Paul Signature 14x8" (Remo coated Ambassador over Ambassador Hazy on 6-ply maple), Pete York Signature 14x6.5" (Remo coated Ambassador over Ambassador Hazy on 4-ply mahogany). We recorded everything with the Pete York. I had wanted to bring more snares (8" brass free floater and 6.5" kapur), but there wasn't room in the station wagon. I am happy with the resulting snare sound, but it is always nice to be able to try things out in a studio setting.

Lastly, I couldn't withhold this one from a drummer forum:

I sort of blew past the snares the first time around. But now that I see it, I NEED a Pete York Signature snare! I'd never seen one, but after a little research, it looks very nice. I read somewhere that they only produced 25 of them. Is that accurate??? Was this a Europe-only signature model?
