I ran across Plini on youtube about a year ago and agree that he is both an incredible player AND highly musical.

His "End of Everything" EP (featuring Marco Minnemann) is some of the most beautiful stuff I've heard in years.

This whole generational discussion is pants-on-head ret***ed. Every generation has great music and music that eats donkey d**k. This has been the case since the dawn of popular music. For every Whole Lotta Love there's a Je T'Aime...Moi Non Plus by Jane Birkin Serge Gainsbourg (both on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in January 1970). Sure there were 80's hard rock and metal bands who were cheesy beyond compare and played to backing tracks. But there were also bands in that era who SLAMMED live and did it the right way. To say something like "am I the only one who wishes the 80's never happened?" just shows your abject ignorance and screams "HI! I'M REALLY YOUNG AND HAVE NO CONCEPT OF THE BIGGER PICTURE!"

You know how styles always come back, slightly different, but they come back. Does anyone though really think women, and men for that matter, are really going to start using Aquanet again?

Cinderella was a great and under rated band, good blues rock. Early Ratt and early Crue (shout at the devil era) I thought had it. Old VH still holds up today. Even the dudes in the cheesier band could still shred, take for example Andy Timmons from Danger Danger.

Danger Danger was one of those backing tracks bands.

Though Ratt makes me smile due my memories as a kid, I remember listening to Wanted Man while working in the yard, they do not stand the test of time.

Crüe's Shout record, I agree that is what 80's metal jumpstart and VH are legends.

except that Animals as Leaders is almost unlistenable because it's just technical wizardry at the expense of musicality. "Fill every space with as many notes as we can, well as 10 layers of guitar all playing different things." It's totally overwhelming to me, at least.

One night my friends and I had this debate about 10yrs ago. Long story short, in one night we each ate 2.5-3 steaks. First to Geno's, then Pat's and then in my case, the half from Jim's while some had another whole. Geno's won that night.
