Contrary to their all show no go reputation many of them were very talented musicians...and many were not.
Off the top of my head I remember Tommy Aldridge was in Whitesnake along with Steve Vai and Adrian Vandenberg for example.

Writing a hook could be heavily debated.
I will give you many of the players were technical wizards.

This whole generational discussion is pants-on-head ret***ed.
Every generation has great music and music that eats donkey d**k. This has been the case since the dawn of popular music. For every Whole Lotta Love there's a Je T'Aime...Moi Non Plus by Jane Birkin Serge Gainsbourg (both on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in January 1970).
Sure there were 80's hard rock and metal bands who were cheesy beyond compare and played to backing tracks. But there were also bands in that era who SLAMMED live and did it the right way. To say something like "am I the only one who wishes the 80's never happened?" just shows your abject ignorance and screams "HI! I'M REALLY YOUNG AND HAVE NO CONCEPT OF THE BIGGER PICTURE!"sigpicStill Way Too Much Crap
