I do both pretty tight and I get a really punchy sound with lots of bass and tone. Blanket just slightly resting on both heads.

This is the video that got me the sound I want. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zK0Ul2MCTck

I did do it your way in the past, but I definitely prefer it my way now. I feel you get more tone and resonance from the drum. Of course all of this is personal opinion.

I am amazed how that Travis Barker/Emo set-up is consistent in so many players. Everything seems to be in the same spot and angle no matter who plays the kit.

That said, the finish looks nice.

You may not like the guy, but it was him who inspired that set-up to almost every band on the Warp Tour. Your custom company 4 piece set up with a flat rack tom and a flat cymbal set-up that goes crash, ride on a straight stand, crash, then a china all the way to the right lower than the crashes, fits that bill. The only difference is the lack of a crazy color combination and a square kick. Those differences are why I believe your kit has longevity.

I'm curious how many of those kits have been put on Ebay. There was one that was discussed here that the owner wanted a stupid amount of money for it. In the seller's mind it was reasonable due to the amount he paid for it. The problem is the brand, drum sizes, and especially finish choices were extremely trendy. Trendy always ends up being dated.

Does it really matter how someone sets up their kit and how many people have similar set ups? For hardcore and metal/punk/rock etc this set up/similar variations just works. Why? I'm not sure, but just for that kind of music I've always found it to be very comfortable and often the four drums and five cymbals are all you need. I don't meant to aim this at you Dale, it just really, really frustrates me when nearly every four piece kit that's flat and pretty clean is a 'Travis Barker' set up - it's a four piece kit. It's similar to saying every simple four piece kit is a 'Ringo Starr' set up - it's not really true. Sorry to vent at you.

I don't care either way how people set their drums up, but there is no denying the similarities. I play mostly a 4 piece and the comparison does not come up.

If someone is going to show their drum kit, they should expect some discussion and criticism. If the comparison bothers them because it happens all the time, perhaps it's true.

loll well I don't see the similarities, specially in my playing style, but i don't really care to argue that. I love the shell composition, sizes, TONE, and finish on my kit, and that's all that matters. I need to take some updated pics with the 15" sound edge hi hats and 20" twenty crash..

I still fail to see how they're as similar as you make out, bar in number of drums and cymbals. The point that everyone likes to make about every four piece kit ever being a Barker set up is not true, just people like to make out it has far more weight than it does. If you compared say Tasty808s kit to Barkers then that's fairer, because those two are way more similar. I just can't see it with this one.
