  • WOOD HOOPS on a Dennis Chambers signature snare, and a new Pearl S2000.

Sorry to make a new thread for my kit AGAIN, after only a couple of days, but MIKE (Boomcrashbang) requested pictures of my new WOOD HOOPS on my Dennis Chambers Signature snare, and I must deliver.

I got a pair of Gibraltar 10-ply Maple Wood Hoops for about USD70 each, and it really changed the sound of my Dennis Chambers Signature Snare for the better. It sounds very woody, warm and fat. The rim shots and rim clicks on this thing are killer. And as the hoops add another inch and a bit or so, I got a new snare stand to accommodate it. Got the S-2000 Pearl snare stand, and daaamn, it's heavy duty.

Got the hoops at 30% off and the S2000 at 25% off, thank god for year end sales.

Thought I'd upload some pictures of the snare with the kit as well.

Awesome! Wood hoops on anything make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside, but it looks especially elegant with the white finish.

And the kit is looking better than ever as well!

Looks like a great idea for the DC! I should maybe do that with my DC, since I've grown tired of its sound with the die-cast hoops.

Who had those hoops for 30% off? Is the sale still going?

            Oh my gosh.
Everytime I see this kit, I want to run out and buy a vintage luddy. It's a good thing I have self control.
That snare is killer man. And those cymbals... OHHHHH those cymbals.
            Amazing kit. Simply amazing.

Looks nice! Vintage Ludwigs are always a win!
But if I were you, I'd invest in some better hearing protection. I have the same earmuffs, and while they might seem fit if you haven't tried much stuff out, try some good earprotection, and a new world will reveal itself to you. I can't really say if you're a hard hitter or not, but either way, drums and cymbals are loud, and it would be a shame to sacrifice your hearing just because you don't know better.

THANKS MIKE! And you're sure to win the best big kit category.

haha, I love the white+wood hoops combo. I loved it ever since I saw the Akira Jimbo snare for the first time. So I already knew I'd love it aesthetically for sure.

Indeed it does sound lovely. Sounds to me quite similar to Yamaha's Elvin Jones signature snare (That was the sound I was hoping for in the first place. heh)

I was also curious as to how it would look. I saw a couple of people had said they had put wood hoops on the DC snare, with good results, but I could not find any pictures.

Yes! You should definitely try it! It really changes the sound, and I find it an all-round improvement. I was thinking of trying out a thicker batter on it next time, to get an extra fat sounding snare

I got the hoops at a local store, in Malaysia. It was down from USD110 (for both hoops) to about USD75.

Actually I use some foam earplugs as ear protection. But sometimes, I use the earmuffs over my IEMS, if I'm listening to music on my iPod while playing, so I can play along to the music, and still block out enough of the drums, so that I don't have to turn the music volume up too high.

But usually I just use my earplugs.

Ok, well I'm not going to buy from Malaysia, but I found a few places here that have them for not a bad price. Thx!

As for batters on the DC, I suggest the Evans ST Dry 2-ply. It's really not so "dry" as the name implies, and sounds great on the Dennis at least with the original hoops.

As I said, I don't know your playing style, but foam earplugs aren't the optimum of hearing protection. If you prefer plugs, you should rather invest in some high quality reusable musicians plugs. Or, if you prefer the ease of muffs, like me, check these out: http://www.peltor.se/int/Product.asp...&Product_Id=66
If you find these to be overkill, you can have a look at the Optime II instead. But the Optime III are fantastic, and also make the drums sound better!

I dunno, man. I honestly think a lot of sound is blocked out with the plugs, but I guess I could invest in some higher quality ear protection in the future, but for the moment, it does the job, as it blocks out lots of sound, doesn't sound harsh, and I feel no pain in my ears or anything (which I do if I play without the muffs/plugs)

I don't play that hard anyway, but I'll probably invest in some in the future.

Thanks for your concern though. heh

I've tried dry heads, but have found I do not like them to dry. I like some nice overtones

I was thinking of just trying out a few heads.. I have a plain ambassador on it now, and even now it sounds great. But next time I'm going to try a Coated G2 or Emperor. From the sound of it with an ambassador, I think a G2 would be perfect for what I want.
