I've wanted a 60's era Ludwig set for years so when I came across this
set I just couldn't resist. It was farily beat up, missing the front bass drum hoop and claws, missing the bottom hoop on the floor tom, dirty and
scratched up.
I've never restored a set before so I was a little nervous about what to do,
but after doing a little research and asking plenty of questions, I jumped in.
I was helped by the fact that the set wasn't in too bad a shape, it pretty much just needed to be cleaned up and have some parts replaced.
I started by stripping all the hardware off of the shells and and cleaning the
shells. I was suprised by how the scratched all but disappeared once I
cleaned and polished them .
Next I cleaned and polished all the lugs and other hardware with chrome
polish. This was the most time consuming part of the job.
Lastely, I ordered two new bass drum hoops and blue sparkle inlay from
Precision Drum Company in N.Y. The hoops came unpainted so I just needed to paint them and glue on the inlay.
Add a set of new heads and that was it.
btw, the finish looks a bit lighter on the pictures for some reason, the
blue is actually deeper in real life.
