Since I set up and tear down this kit all the time, I just wanted to carry less stuff, so I ended up putting both overhead mics on one boom. The mics are in a X/Y configuration, centered above the snare. I know it's somewhat improper because the capsules are supposed to be closer together (more like a 'V' shape), but I'm still experimenting with the placement on the dual mic holder.
Are you finding that that set up works? If so, leave it. Improper, shmimproper.

It works fine for playing live, and the sound techs I usually work with are always capable of getting a good mix. Since they appreciate the time I save them by bringing my own mics & cables, my mic positioning has never been called into question. Win-win!

Anyway, back to Jamie's point - feel free to steal any rack ideas you find useful, and don't be afraid to break out a pipe cutter and a hacksaw!

When your pipe-cutter blade is worn, it completes the cut, BUT it pushes the end of the pipe in a little, and makes it very difficult to replace rubber end caps!
As one who deals with pipe for a job I concur, and a good reamer helps even more!

I've been geeking out on the Guru stuff with my snare heading this way and forgot how cool this set up was. I Love this set up and I think I have everything I need (I'd have to cut some pipe) except for the long cymbal tubes. This is what I want to recreate and I do have an 8" on order.

Great sounding drums though, Guru really knew what they were doing! And nicely blurred pics of my old mate Dave McKeague demoing them!

He's a nice player. Most of the guys they had demoing their drums were all very solid players for sure. They were making some pretty impressive drums, to me anyway.
