I'm with him. Someone's has give you crap every now and again. I don't think he meant anything truly negative by it.

I would say that if you were to give modern games a chance, you'd probably find yourself to be very pleasantly surprised at just how in-depth they can be.

As to your original question, I suppose you could compare video games more to graphic novels than normal novels if we want to get down to brass tacks, but the depth of story is definitely on par with full length novels.

    • Video games are like any other media. You wouldn't say "I don't like music," after only listening to what's on the top 10 charts.

I like video games and I like books. But I hate story-driven video games. Underrail, Grim Dawn, Divinity Original Sin, XCOM, Slay the Spire, Pathfinder Kingmaker... these are some of my most-played games. Yet, I haven't finished a single one of them. I don't care about the story, so I have no need to finish games. I play for the gameplay and strategy, and once I get bored of that I switch to another game.

Off forum I would've phrased it a different way, but it's just light jest. Think of it as payback for all of your literary witticism's at our expense.

It has been quite awhile since a game really reeled me in and held my attention. I'm just bored to death of the popular modern games, which seem to be built around microtransactions and online gameplay. I found the Red Dead Redemption series(story mode) to be quite good. I haven't finished the second one, but that's because I've been chasing a kid around basically since it came out.

WindWaker was my all-time favorite LoZ game until Breath of the Wild. Which is crazy because I put off playing it for so long based on the initial criticisms like the sailing takes too long, the cell-shaded style is too kiddie, Link belongs on a horse and not a boat, etc. I've played it about 4 times since, hah!

If I decide to spend the money at all, that is.
I'd go for a Switch. If not because your going to be doing a lot of gaming, then because, as Talon mentioned, it's real handy when travelling to pass the down time. For your next Eurotrip

I can understand that. I've got a predilection for puzzle games and a lot of those don't have particularly in-depth stories (The Room series, The Witness, Superliminal, Talos Principal, etc).

Thanks for asking. I had a good time.

                  • Wait we're talking about Zelda. Awesome. Breath of the wild blew my mind. I think Majora's Mask has the best atmosphere overall and for a 20 year old game it's actually aged pretty well. I also loved Link's Awakening (the remake is great) because the story in that game is seriously messed up. It blew my mind as an 11 year old when I played it.

I can't wait to give Majora's Mask a go. I haven't played it since 2000. I think I beat it once and then went back to the masterpiece that is Ocarina of Time. I've looked at some contemporary reviews and was surprised to see it was as highly regarded as Ocarina. I just got a copy off eBay for GameCube but the disc doesn't work. The guy said it was scratch-free and in working order, but I've tried it on two systems now and it won't play on either. Probably because it's very scratched... I'm gonna try getting it resurfaced since I got it for a good price.

I saw them this past Monday in London. I wouldn't have ever called myself a Tool fan - I have a bunch of albums, but I rarely put one on to listen to all the way through: I have like 4 favourite songs that I play quite a lot. But a friend wanted to go to this show since they rarely come over here, and I got kick *** seats so I went, and 75% of the reason for me was to see Danny play. I was transfixed. By far and away the most amazing drummer I've ever seen played live. No question.

And incidentally, that Tool concert turned out to be the greatest show I've ever seen. Not just because all those guys are next level musicians, but because the overall production was just as next level. For a start it's the best sounding gig I've ever been to - you could hear every single ping when the tip hit the ride; the splashes were all coherent and clear; the snare could break your neck and the kicks punched you in the chest. Everything was just so clear and crystal, the mix was outstanding. Then the light and video screen show was unbelievable. I assume that's what it feels like to be on LSD. Really REALLY enjoyed it. A lot.
