  • would this be a stupid move?

I currently have a tama rockstar. The store I take lessons at has a export they teach on, and I think it sounds a lot better than my tama's. Would it be dumb to sell my rockstar to get an export, since they are about the same quality wise? I'd like to get a BRX or MRX, heck even an SRX, but can't afford to right now. Plus I bought std sizes in my tama and have found I like fusion better.

If it were ME, I'd wait until I could afford a BRX or SRX shell pack. If your tama's in good, playable shape, I can't imagine that with equivalent tuning and heads there'd be a difference that warrants a 700 dollar purchase.

Yes very stupid move! Save up and get an srx. Exports r good but not that good. Just buy some new drumheads (batter and resonant) for your tama kit.

ditto. If you just learning to play, almost any kit is going to do you well. Once you get more experience your tastes may change and your ear will definately improve, plus you'll develop certain likes & dislike about hardware, etc - little things that you may not notice now. Then try out the higher end kits.

If you're really concerned about the sound of your Tama, try experimenting with different heads to get a different sound. There's a lot you can do to doctor up a so-so kit.

bottom line, it's the drummer that makes the kit, not the other way around.

Maybe you could try bringing your kit to the store and letting your teacher tune them.

I would save your cash. With good heads and tuning your rockstar will sound just as good if not better.

Yes, i agree. Try that, and unless you just HATE your rockstars and LOVE the exports, save and and buy an SRX or something.

Hay, this has to do with the second post. What is a shell pack? And what does it include?

shell packs usually just include toms and a bass, no snare, no other hardware.

AntiConformist is correct about shell packs. They only come with the drums and sometimes mounting hardware (tom holders, and a clamp if it's a hanging rack tom) and no other stands or hardware. Sometimes you do get a snare, as with the SRX shell pack, but with the higher end stuff, no snare. These are good for people who already have good hardware and want to upgrade their drums, or choose to buy a cheaper hardware pack (the HW-80 SRX hardware pack adds $400-500 onto the kit price, and lists for $655, 2002 prices).

ya. shell packs vary. I don't THINK masters shell packs even include tom arms. some (you mentioned the SRX) do include snares. They're all different, but in general, they're intended for someone who wants to pick out each hardware component piece by piece (if you intend to buy an eliminator, no need to pay for a p-100, etc), or someone who already has a set with acceptable hardware, and wants to upgrade.
