  • thinking about new heads...

    okay so i just got my new old set 2002/03 export elx select in the cobalt mist. Anyway, I have no experience with toms that have resonant heads because my first and only kit was an old kit that didnt have them so I've only ever had to tune the batter. Until now... well I was thinking about leaving the stock resonants and going with remo clear pinstripes for the toms and an emporer x coated for the snare. then when money allows I was gonna get the remo powersonic for the bass. I play mostly rock and metal. if it makes a difference my set is 10,12,14 toms 14 sn and 22 bass.

    thanks in advance and check the sig...

    Those are all great choices for rock/metal. You might also consider replacing your resonants when you can with something like clear ambassadors. You would be suprised how much of an improvement they will make. Resonant heads wear out just like batter heads because every time you play, air is pushing against them. I change the resonants on my toms once a year and my snares usually every six months or so.

      Evans G2s

      i have a set just like yous and i would go with the evan's G2 battered heads for their deep growls with the no res. rings. when they have mic's they sound amazing for my bands concerts.

        Pinstripes are always a top choice for hard rock. I would def. start out with clear Pinstripes, and if you find over time that you want to try something new, consider Evans EC2 Coated or even Evans G2 for a more open tone. As for the bass, I would seriously consider Evans EMAD with a Remo Falam Slam pad or something similar. Out of hte three major bass heads (Powersonic, EMAD, Superkick) I think EMAD has the deepest and fullest tone.

        Wait to change your reso heads, if you're needing to save up for a bass head, you probably don't need to spend another $40 off the bat just to swap the resos out. Pearl heads aren't amazing, but they work fine when tuned well. All three of my Pearl kits have Protone heads on the reso side.

          thanks for all your help I may end up switching out the resos before getting a new bass batter as I have an evans hydralic that was in pretty good condition so I'm just gonna play it for a while and try out the powersonic and emad at GC.

            Pinstripes period! Powersonic for the kick will be very nice. Got one on my VBX and love the sound so far (havent done any tweaking yet), or a PS3 and small pillow. Had the PS3 on my Exports.

              Don't limit yourself to just PinStripes .. Any Emperor model will do / or any brands equal. Also you can use moongel if need be and no moongel if need not.

              Just a thought ...

                I'm not limiting myself to just that, I just like the look of pinstripes and i have dealt with them before I really only want either clear or black heads but I'll prolly go with the clear b/c they don't make the powersonic in black to look similar to the black pinstripes. I'm an asthetics wh*re, it has to match and it has to also sound and look good. That is why I have about 3k in stands because everything matches and it all top of the line gibraltar. all my pedals match (gib.) and all my cymbals about 4k+ worth are zildjian A's and K's.

                  thanks for the input everyone tomorrow I will be going to GC and ordering some of the heads and after days of deliberation, I am set on the clear pinstripes for the toms and powersonic for the bass. pretty sure I'm gonna go with the emporer x coated for the snare but the other day I saw a snare at GC that had a remo tattoo skyn with the skull design on it and if the thickness is what I want it to be I will more than likely go with that b/c it looks sick.

                    I couldn't decide what heads I wanted too so last week I put these heads on my EXR's:

                    08"= Clear G1
                    10"= Coated G2
                    12"= Onyx 2
                    14"= Coated EC2 w/ SST

                    The kit sounds great with the stock resos. Clear G1's for resos would sound better but . I use an Emad Batter and a EQ3 reso on the kick.
                    This is my second week playing out with this combination and I like it better than last week. If I was to go with one head type and make it uniform around the kit I'd have to go with Coated G2's. I tried the clear G2's on my old ELX kit and didn't like it. The coating makes all the difference.
